Did anyone else notice this in the announcement on Microsoft's blog? They probably have no information regarding a future version of OS X, but just thought it was a curious statement to say.

Hello from the future. I'm using 10.9.2.

I have not used Onenote before, but am interested in Onenote for Mac and iPad. But I have a question. If I create a notebook on either the Mac or iPad, do I have to have internet access to read it. I am thinking about using Onenote for trip planning, but I will not always have internet access when I might want to refer to the notebook. Thanks for your help with this question.

If you make a notebook on your Mac, it will be on your Mac without internet access. It won't be on your iPad until it has been able to sync once to the internet and once to the iPad. Afterwards, every change has to sync as well on the internet.

In other words: It'll work without internet, but it won't sync without it.

You will have to sign in the first time, though.

Found this on Twitter.

Found this frequently on my wife's OneDrive (SkyDrive) OSX client.

  • Create document using Office Mac.
  • Save document using one of the above symbols in the filename
  • Office permits saving the file with the symbol in filename, as per OSX's allowance
  • Save document into local folder that is set to sync with OneDrive
  • OneDrive errors, does not sync the document and presents the error message you saw on twitter

Difference between filenames supported by Microsoft/OneDrive and OSX.

I use OneNote at work and it's fine. For personal though I've been an Evernote Premium user and like the feature set. I went paperless 3 years ago and using the combo of Fujitsu 1300 ScanSnap and Evernote integration all works great for my needs. Nice to see Microsoft moving forward. Hope they push things forward and don't dump it early in it's lifecycle.

Good luck with finding a good review. What exactly would you consider "test driving the UI"?

Being able to use the functionality of the program that's available to a local installation (e.g., notebook creation, note creation, searching, etc.) for the primary purpose of seeing how the UI is organized.

The Web clipper works really bad. It creates a picture of the captured site. Just compare it to Evernote. There is no comparison...

Some other things I saw:
  • There is no way to use an offline notebook. Everything has to sync to OneDrive. I am ok with it, but some might not.
  • The same organization options as in Windows are present
  • There is no way to set a password protected notebook (or I haven't found a way to do that)
  • No way to import a PDF file as a note
  • No way to set a default notebook.
  • I cannot change the color of the default notebook
  • Moving a note page to a different notebook works by cut and paste. I would prefer a menu option by right clicking on the note page in question

I will continue testing, but my first impressions are not very positive. Especially the web clipper functionality is a deal breaker for me..

At first I was very excited about Mac OS X release. But after testing OneNote for 30 minutes, looks like I'll continue using OneNote for Windows inside Parallels. Mac version is just too limited.

Too bad to hear this. It's kind of the same thing they've done with the Web version and then the iOS versions which makes using OneNote as your primary app difficult because you can't count on being able to use it the same way from every device. This is where Evernote really stands out - the platform limitations are generally pretty minor.

Print Options

Can you print from OneNote? I see send email as PDF, but it won't let me click it!

Everybody claims to like toolbars or tool palates, the Ribbon is just a collection of them.

I have to admit, I was prepared to hate the ribbon based on all I had heard from friends for a few years. When i had to use it I was perplexed with the issues. I had to learn where a few things moved, but overall I was fine with it.

Over time I've put the commands that make up 90% of my use into the quick access tool bar and set the ribbons on auto-collapse so only have to see 'em when accessing something I do infrequently.

EXCEPT - most of those commands aren't even in the ribbon, so end up having to dig into the settings to find things I think should be obvious. Also after rambling through their clutter for years, I even know where a few things are. Will never like this interface though - at least I feel no more won over than in 2010, and only my workarounds make it palatable at all.

Truth to tell, after all the years of experience on various OS's and computing metaphors still prefer nested menus supplemented by intelligently chosen context-sensitive right-click pop-up menus... ....though came to grok Apple's early "Inspectors" in Keynote and other products....

....and feel the lack of many familiar tools in the all touch world of iDevices (I'm a late adopter and still not in love).

Was the clipped web page image searchable? I'm not seeing any OCR with inserted images (and they don't appear searchable).

I'd really like to be able to test drive it without having to dip a toe into the Microsoft ecosystem.

Evernote's interface is tragic, its functionality temperamental, and its OCR and multi-language support is laughable... but it's the devil I know.

It syncs your notes, so you have to login in with your live account...

Meh. Been using Evernote for over 5 years.

Evernote is better compared to the Mac version of OneNote. Microsoft missed a chance here.

There are some basic things that should work but unfortunately they don't:
  • Importing PDFs
  • Exporting to PDF
  • Web clipping with rich text. Currently web pages are saved as images
  • Printing support

I would like to use OneNote, but unfortunately I cannot.

Those things can be added in an update. Getting something out there now is helpful IMO.

Then you should probably make a test account, just in case you like Microsoft's offerings. That's the best advice I can give.

sucks that it's only Cloud based. The GUI looks nice, though. Hope that makes it's way into the next Office for Mac. Good that it's only 10.9 also. Get those stragglers to upgrade!

Too bad it they didnt make it for at least 10.8 :(
Also if you are wondering why I am still in 10.8 its because 10.9 really doesn't play well with my Mac and makes it a slow mess.

I had 10.9 on my Mac until January then I just gave up and downgraded to 10.8 because 10.9 really makes my Mac lag and really buggy
