If it was cash, sure ... but $1500 in the form of a bulky HP laptop?

Bulky compared to what? Compared to Macs? Sure it seems bulky then, but there are really only two models of macbooks (white poly and aluminum). Compared the the rest of the market the HP is quite standard. Apple's laptops are quite thin, but that doesnt make them the average by which you should compare every other laptop.

I might take the HP, but it would never come home: its next stop would be a local charity that we've given to.

-hh

Well I wouldn't keep it either. But seeing as how I'm in college and taking out loans for it, the laptop would be going straight to ebay.

Deathknell??? Thanks for the laugh.

Personally, I'm indifferent (not anti) to Blu-ray. I don't watch movies on my computer, my family doesn't watch movies on their computers, my friends don't watch movies on their computers. I think the "handful" here are those screaming for Blu-ray on their computers.

As far as the future of Blu-ray, I remember the Apple detractors talking about how iTunes was a dead end because compressed songs in AAC format would never compete against SACD. I wonder how that turned out???

I know you're on a crusade for Blu-ray, but let's face facts: audio and video on optical discs are a dying breed - Sony's last gasp effort at relevance in a world that has moved on without them. Downloadable media is the future. And Apple knows it.

Agreed, Blu-Ray will be short lived. For those whining about not being able to use BD on Macs, what on earth for? What hasn't been realized here is that HDD and BD rips actually preserve battery life by avoiding the need to power and spin an optical drive - HDD movies = longer battery life. Regardless of what anyone claims - HDD movies offer the same Hi-Def detail that BD disks do, sans the power drain, and inconvenience of having to tote and care for BD disks. Your'e quite right, Sony will soon be left in the dust with their own 'bag 'o hurt.' Downloadable media is the future, and the future = now.

You can't rip a BD to your Mac if it can't even read the disk now can you? You anti Blu-ray people are funny. If downloadable media = now, then do you mind pointing me to where I can get it?

If I need to do that, then you've completely missed the 21C.

How low can you go, to claim that Apples are better because you can dual-boot to Windows and do the things that Apple doesn't want you to do.

Sad. Even sadder, because Apple's dual-boot driver package cripples the Windows systems when you boot them.

Sad. Sad. Sad.

AnyDVD, CloneDVD & Plex work just fine.

Toast works...? (even on Mac OS X...)
Yes, after the media is ripped using AnyDVD, Toast 10 with High-Def/Blu-ray Disc Plug-in will work as well.

I know. I run Windows on my Mac too. However, I was under the impression we were talking about notebook applications, not desktops at home where you can watch a BD on your HT.
The point is, there is no need to drain battery life from your laptop's optical drive when you can view a ripped movie file on the HD instead.

I'm not arguing that. I'm arguing how do you get the BD movie file off the disk and onto your laptop HDD without a BD drive to rip it? You can't.

BD drive at home = lighter laptop while traveling. I'm looking forward to grabbing a MBA so as to eliminate the extra baggage of an optical drive altogether.

I agree with you on that. I've only used my optical drive in my Macbook about 3 times since I've purchased my laptop. All these were to install software :)

I'd love to shed a few pounds on my notebook in favor of getting rid of the optical drive.

Except that most of the general populace cannot afford to buy something like that...

Anyways the new aluminium Macbook is already light enough...

(Well, the new alu MBP is lighter than the orig white Macbook, so by that logic the new aluminium macbook should be even lighter.)

Like a 5.x lb laptop is too much to handle.
The excuses are getting ridiculous.

Boot into Windows to rip a BD movie or watch one? That's real convenient...

Having to plug in an external BD drive to do either? That's convenient too.

And what's with card readers? Didn't Apple have an ad showing a Dell having wires hanging everywhere and they were ripping on it? And yet you have to plug in all sorts of dongles and adapters into a Mac laptop? Or lug around a USB cable for your camera? A DVI to VGA adapter for presentations? Etc. Lame.

And why no dock? Having to plug in audio and video (keyboard, mouse and ethernet too if you're not using wireless) instead of having a simple dock sucks. Look at some of the desktop pics on macrumors where people have their laptop on a stand and wires hanging everywhere. Elegant solution Apple!

The lighter and thinner, the more appreciated. 15" MBP fits into my case much more easily than a bulky HP. Maximum lightness is always appreciated while traveling, and an extra lb. or so does make a difference.

Not such a hassle, really. Much preferred to lugging around and keeping track of BDs.

For now, but in two months this will no longer be an issue.

All in one card readers are more lame, as they tend to malfunction and perform poorly. I'd rather use an external USB card reader, which I rarely even have the use for. No need for a Swiss Army Knife these days when you have WiFi, an HD, Blue Tooth, a thumb drive, and peripherals which you can choose to take with you, only when you absolutely need them.

Many happen to prefer wireless, go figure.

Not to me. And I've traveled around the world with a 6.5lb laptop. Hardly a difference vs a 5.5lb laptop. Actually, unnoticeable.

I've never had a built-in card reader malfunction or perform poorly. I'd rather throw the SD card from my camera into a built-in reader than have to lug an external reader or camera-to-USB cable. You were just griping about lugging extra weight while traveling and yet you advocate it as well?

Do tell me how to wirelessly hook up an external monitor. And wirelessly hook up the charging cable for my laptop. And wirelessly hook up audio to perform as well as wired audio. And why would I want a wireless keyboard and mouse if they don't move from my desk? Just so I can waste batteries and electricity to charge it?
