Unless Apple brings subscriptions to AppleTV soon, they are going to be left out of next generation consumer media. Netflix streaming and services like HULU have been growing very fast. As has been mentioned Silverlight is the core technology used in Netflix streaming and honesly we are lucky to have this option on the Mac. It's a very good piece of software and I'm happy to have it installed.

We are just about to replace our Dish Network equipment with a Roku and use Netflix + OTA HiDef. I wanted to buy an AppleTV but FFS who can afford $2.99 an episode?? Sorry, but unlike music, I don't want to own my TV shows and movies and TBH I think most people would agree.

there can be only one!!

Why can't they just agree and apply the one type across the market. I don't see the massive deal. Next we will not only see Apple, MS and Adobe fighting it out Google will come along with their answer to the issue.

Flash on OSX is such a POS. I can care less if it is Microsoft. If they put out a good product that works great I will use it.

At present, both Silverlight and Flash suck.

I'm hoping for a suitable third-party standard, but it looks like that will take a while to proliferate.

I was excited to see this update hoping that they fixed a Known bug. When watching Silverlight content on an external monitor the content will not play full screen. It initially plays full screen but as soon as you click anything on your main display the Silverlight content on the external monitor reverts back to windowed mode. This feature is desired because a lot of Netflix subscribers (including myself) would like to watch Netflix streaming content full screen on their external monitor.

FYI for anyone trying to solve this: Plex is free and does enable external monitor full screen playback from Netflix with a free plugin. The negative is that the fast forward and rewind controls don't work properly in plex (yet).

Yes.
I successfully stream Netflix from an AEBS (802.11n) > MacBook (OS 10.5.7) > Safari 4.0.2 > Lightwave > DVI to S-video adaptor > 50" Zenith Rear projection with no issues. Quite pleased actually.

Certainly your setup differs from mine...
Perhaps it's not Silverlight so much as it is a video card/processor or something? What's your flow chart look like?

2 Reasons Silverlight Will Die...

2 REASONS SILVERLIGHT WILL DIE...

#1: Apple will most likely release new versions of Safari that are better, even for POWERPC Macs.

#2: Adobe will most likely release new versions of Flashplayer that are at least comparable for POWERPC Macs.

Oh, I forgot to mention the most important thing, SILVERLIGHT 3 is NOT PowerPC compatible, so that's like 20-30% of the Mac market down the drain from the start!

If you have a mix of different Macs like I do, some PowerPC, some Intel, why would you bother with this?

Way to go Microsuck. HAha!

Well I now have a legitimate excuse not to support silverlight. I have a PowerPC Mac. :p

Too Microsoft's credit, the Mac version of Silverlight seems a lot more reasonable on the CPU than Flash. Although it would be nice if HTML5 video is pushed through. Small victories I guess.

Sky TV use it for their online skyplayer service, which i signed up to for a couple of months to watch the Ashes.

It pains me to say, it works pretty well.

Far better than our opening batsmen at any case.

Reasons 10.6 Snow Leopard will die.

(I'm being sarcastic, by the way. 20% of Macs are PowerPC you say? That number is shrinking, fast. 20% of about 5% market share is 1% of the machines out there being PPC Macs. I can well understand Microsoft not supporting them)

for the record, Silverlight 1.0 did support PPC Macs. They are focusing new development on Intel, but just to throw that out there.

I find your post HILARIOUS for the simple reason you might as well be talking about Apple in your post as Microsoft. I mean face it, Apple did the SAME THING by abandoning PowerPC in Snow Leopard and all the former PPC fanatics turned Intel fanatics LOVE IT that Apple is "finally" abandoning that "ball and chain" that is PPC. And here you are, calling Microsoft a name like "Microsuck". Are you going to call Apple something like "Applesuck" or maybe "Appholes" or something? It's the SAME THING, after all. I just find it LUDICROUS that Apple fans think EVERYTHING Microsoft does is evil, yet they are 100% blind to the same crap from Apple themselves.

How is Apple any better when they abandon (as you say 20-30%; I've seen figures that indicate as much as 50%) of their hardware base. Microsoft at least maintains support for older hardware in their operating system and tries to support most hardware vendors (whereas Apple seems more like they're FIGHTING 3rd party vendors because they're competing against them and thus have a conflict of interest).

This idea that some new open standard in Safari is somehow going to make a difference is ludicrous. ALMOST NO ONE USES SAFARI other than Mac users except on the iPhone. Most Windows users use Internet Explorer or Firefox. Apple won't even release Safari for Linux. In fact, they won't release ANYTHING for Linux, not even iTunes, which would increase their sales at the iTunes Store.

Sites like Netflix use Silverlight, not Safari. Netflix is incredibly popular and iTunes offers NOTHING TO COMPETE with subscription based rentals so any Apple tech that still does work on my PowerMac is made useless by Apple not supporting subscription or even rental based programming options. I like being able to rent HD movies on my AppleTV, but I'd prefer a subscription plan and Apple refuses to go in that direction. When you consider they only SELL TV shows and mostly only rent movies (and ONLY to AppleTV except for around 2 dozen total selection that you can buy or rent on all machines), it's not hard to see why Apple is losing the long-term game when it comes to movies and TV shows. People want to rent or subscribe to TV shows, not have to buy (at high prices compared to DVD or BD) and store HUGE amounts of space for something they will probably only watch once. I've suggested this to Apple before and they just say, that's nice and do nothing. Why even sell HD movies if you cannot get permission to sell more than 2 dozen (mostly crap) selections and why not rent TV shows for a lower price? I would have rented the entire last season of Smallville in HD from iTunes (local station is not HD for some reason that shows it), but I do not want to BUY it so the heck on Apple. So what good is any Apple technology if they will not offer the consumer what the CONSUMER WANTS TO BUY as opposed to what Apple wants to sell? Netflix IS offering those options, but (you guessed it), you NEED Silverlight to use it.

Yes, it sucks that Silverlight 2.0 and 3.0 is not offered for PPC, but that is simply because Apple themselves have abandoned PPC and the next operating system release will ALSO abandon PPC. Apple has killed PPC, abandoned over 1/3 of its entire user base (because they want to try and force them to upgrade since they make no money off past sales and apparently don't think that ticking off their past users matters since they believe NO ONE will EVER go back to Windows and there are no 3rd party Mac clones (unless you count Psystar) to avoid paying Apple whatever it wants for OS X hardware (it has a virtual monopoly on OS X hardware). Basically, Apple's entire mentality is screw the customer; they'll keep coming back anyway. Yes, Microsoft sucks, but so does Apple. Most companies suck because they put profit before people. Come to think of it, that's why society in general is going down the toilet and businesses are failing left and right. They care more about trying to line their pockets than serve their customers. Greed will destroy everything in the end. It always does.

One GOOD thing about Silverlight, though is that it supports hardware (GPU) acceleration. Apple's own operating system DOES NOT support GPU acceleration for most the GPUs out there! It's pretty darn pathetic, IMO when a Microsoft product better supports Mac hardware than Apple's own operating system!

I couldn't have said it better myself!! Another Piece of junk from MS that does nothing but retrieve personal information and is unreliable and buggy.

Don't need it, won't download it. It's just another proprietary bait to lock users into a technology that will later stop being updated and lag behind Windows versions, just like every other piece of MS junk released for Macs. Sensible users should STAY clear of yet another monopolistic act by our favorite software company, not to mention the fact that it phones home.

MS IS DEAD.

I've had no problems using Silverlight and Netflix. Let's stop bashing it just because it's a Microsoft product

Lies. It's not buggy at all and there is no collection or transfer of personal information involved in installing or using said plugin. You're not really doing the Apple fanboys any favor by posting irrational nonsense.

Have you even tried it or are you just saying that because your are biased against microsoft? I think silverlight kicks flash's butt.

http://www.shinedraw.com/mathematics/silverlight-vs-flash-throwing-object/

I use NEITHER, sorry. That's why my Safari has ClickFlash activated...when I need something Flash-related, I click on it and the movie/animation plays.

Both technologies are a bag of hurt and absolutely unnecessary to 90% of my browsing experience...not to mention that NetFlix doesn't exist where I live; and I won't be deluded by the fact that one specific company signed with MS to deliver that proprietary BS.

Have you ever used MSN Messenger on a Mac? What about IE? Feel like comparing update cycles and features with Windows versions? Whoever downloads and install this plugin is helping MS achieve its illegal monopolistic goals...Silverlight is just another shot at it directed at the Mac community...NO, thanks.

Offline Silverlight Viewing

Does anyone know how to download Silverlight videos to watch offline and/or convert to other formats? What if I want to carry them on my iPod? Anyone? :D

You should at least do your homework before posting BS.

Other than that, I may only add that HTML5 is gonna be more than enough against proprietary crap like Flash and Silverlight.

Yes, and what part of that wall of text are you attributing to BS? Or was that just another attempt at FUD? Apparrently you missed the -

"Internet-enabled features in software will send information about your computer ("standard computer information") to the Web sites you visit and Web services you use. This information is generally not personally identifiable."

BTW, if the above bothers you, then this one will really keep you up at night:

http://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

Which politely says -

"Why we collect personal information"

"We collect your personal information because it helps us deliver a superior level of customer service."

Oh gosh it's so clear now why the Apple zealots have their panties in a wad.

You know, I have to say it again. When people go out of their way to MAKE UP STUFF to bitch about, it really detracts from all of the *valid* arguments in the PC vs Mac debate.
