I think this is a very humbling action by Microsoft.
I have been using Numbers and find it beta quality still.
A little competition will help the end user.

I am completely satisfied with pages on my iPad but nothing wrong with having more legitimate choices for the iPad seing as its the only tablet worthwhile anyway.

Kitty asks...

"Free please?"

I.e. like the documents 2 free app...

Open office needs to develop an app please.

Now if we could get Adobe to hurry up and release PhotoShopTouch!! Why Android got first dibs is beyond me. Im sure they sold 100 copies by now.

Same reason Microsoft debuts newer functionality in the Mac version of Office first. Because if something goes wrong, it's only 1-5% of the user base that get's pissed off, and not the coveted 95-99%.

This has to be true. Microsoft would be fools to not make an office suit for the tablet with 80% of the market. I know that is the one thing keeping me from using my iPad for nearly everything. I need Word and Excel and Powerpoint on a daily basis.

I'm with you, Duke. Except for PPoint. I dumped it for Keynote and never looked back.

MS in the app store

I wonder if they will pay the standard 30% cut to Apple.

It'd be pretty funny if the app were rejected because of 'similar functionality from an Apple App' (for me, at least :)

I have really just had it with the bloatware factor of Office. I only was using a fraction of its capabilities since I had migrated to Pages and Numbers. THEN I learned that Office 2008 was written for Intel platforms but the installer required Rosetta since it was written for the Power PC chipset. Great. Nice going, MS. It was easy to say good-bye to the 19-click updates and the ever-growing size of Office.

Fix the bugs in OfM 2011 first

Really wish MS would fix the compatibility with Lion: have used OfM since 2004 release and the current iteration is very poor. The latest update from MS has resulted in a worse experience than before. With SnowLeopard it worked OK, but with Lion there are all sorts of issues that need to be resolved.

i'd love to have the equation editor. there isn't a single app out there that can handle equations..... and thats a huge miss for a mechanical engineering student like me..

I don't see any advantage. I could see it on a regular computer but not a tablet. There's only so much you can do with a spreadsheet on the iPad.
Correction: There's only so much YOU can do with a spreadsheet on the iPad. I, and others, could probably do lots, lots more.

What I doubt is the Lion bit of the story. Why would M$ suddenly change their whole 3-4 year upgrade pattern, pushing OSX ahead of the Win version? Perhaps a .x update for better Lion compatibility, but not "Office 2012" or whatever.

What's the advantage of this over iWork though? I'm asking from an ignorant standpoint. I really don't know.

There are several advantages as I see it. First, there is a certainty in knowing that documents created on non-iDevices can be read on the iDevices in the format they were intended to be. And edited on the iDevice with the same assuredty.
Secondly, it's a big plus for corporate critters to know that MS Office runs in an iDevice. It's like traveling with your favorite stuffed teddy bear. "Does it run MS Office?" "Yes, it does." "Good, then it's a real computer."

Don't worry, I'm sure it will be released in 2014

I know you were trying to be funny, but when I read "next year," I got the same sense of foreboding.

Be a godsend if it has equation editor. That's what keeps me from using Pages.

I think MS learned something when they dropped some functionality from MS Office on the next to last version.

It would be interesting to see how this goes, because MS actually put some effort into the Bing app for iPad.

The Mac group ( now probably called the Apple Products group) doesn't breathe the same bad air that affects the rest of the software writers at MS. They have always been a better led bunch.

I don't see any advantage. I could see it on a regular computer but not a tablet. There's only so much you can do with a spreadsheet on the iPad.

Perhaps, but if you have an iPad and you want to do something, it's best if it still can be done, even if Siri was the easiest way to get the formulas and date into the cells, and text into the docs.

This would be a good move by Microsoft. Quick Office, Pages, and Documents To Go all lack some features that are in the full Office, and while I don't expect Office for iPad to have everything in the Mac or Windows versions, it could have more than other iPad apps.

It's good for MS and good for Apple. It's also good for the end user of the best software and best hardware are available together.

So... there shouldn't be more apps then?
Riiiight. That's good for the ecosystem.
w00master

I'm not sure where you are coming from, but yes, good software is good for the ecosystem.

iPad with a Bluetooth Keyboard (and Mouse?) hooked up to an external monitor?
;)

ummm... the iPad is the monitor when you are being mobile.

Why does MS Office necessarily need to have an "advantage?" Isn't more 3rd party support for iPad (and iOS overall) good? I think it is.

Then again, this is a news report on Microsoft on an Apple site... I shouldn't be surprised for the start of negative feedback.

Aren't you guys tired of this PC vs. Mac stuff? I am. Let's move on.

w00master

What the he11 are you going off about? This isn't a PC vs anybody thread.

Not sure why you got "idiotranked" down. Good point.

It was a good point, until his brain jiggled loose and he went into a PC vs Mac rant.

I hope this is true. I'd love ms office iphone/ipad apps. The iWork one's aren't great for reading office files at times.

Same for the Mac app!

Were Pages and Numbers twice as good as they currently are, this is still good news, if true. However, Keynote stomps all over PowerPoint.

Just want to agree that Office >iWork.

Pages runs a bit smoother, but the UI is inferior, it baffles me that the "cmd+t" font formatting pane is ubiquitous in OSX, including pages and mail. It is TERRIBLE.

Keynote can create great things, but its usability is stunted by the cumbersome menu system in 'inspector'. IMO MS actually had it best with Office 2004, and its vertical ribbon that used screen space more effectively. Unfortunately the UI in the new windows 7 office is a bit ropey. I don't know how they managed to mess up the 'file' menu... Anyway.

Interesting in an iPad app, but the price better be reasonable.

Mac version of Office has preceded Windows in the past. I think, in this case, It's not like Office on the Mac running Loin will do more then it does on Windows, but it will take advantage of what Lion does that Windows cannot in that it will do the "Versions" thing.

Amen!!

I gave iWork and honest, 3 month, all out usage... I even removed all MS from my MacBook Pro to force myself to learn the Apple system. Keynote rocked (as good as PowerPoint), Pages was usable (almost as good as Word) and Numbers was a complete waste of time.

Even though I am a total Apple fanboy, I have to admit that there is only one intuitive, widely supported, easy to learn spreadsheet. It's name is MS Excel.

If Office comes to the iPad with 70%+ of the desktop versions features, it will sell big.

Agreed on all counts. I did similar and within an otherwise Windows-heavy work environment. You can only get so close with compatibility and iWork doesn't get anywhere near "so close", so these would be welcome releases, and realisticify the iPad for a lot of people.

To everyone who does not want Office for iPad and Mac App Store, remember that Office was made for Mac before Windows. ;)

iWork and Numbers generally work great on my Mac for my own needs, but I have met other people (mainly clients) who have reached the limit of these two applications and must rely on MS-OFFICE.

On the iPad it's another story:
I bought QuickOffice, Pages and Numbers. Considered the two other major office suites available, but due to continuous poor reviews I decided not to get them.

I use Pages and Numbers 99% of the time. QuickOffice very rarely as it misses a lot of basic functionality.

Pages and Numbers would be almost perfect for me if these apps would support Dropbox synchronization, and Font Management.
QuickOffice has great integration with cloud services like Dropbox and others but lacks application functionality.

Having said the above, I hope Microsoft makes a great Office suite for iOS, one that actually works and is fully compatible with their desktop version.

Wow, Office is already so bad on the Mac, imagine how poorly made it will be on the iPad...

"We are in the Windows Era. We were, we are, and we always will be."

Perhaps Stevie B. is not quite as short-sighted as his bluster would have you believe. Office, not Windows, is Microsoft's strongest product line. Having Office exist on other platforms, like iOS and the Macintosh, will help Microsoft stay relevant.

It would be great to finally pick and choose individual iWork and Office programs! I tend use both iWork and Office for a variety of different tasks because they both have strengths and weaknesses.

In an ideal world, I'd pay for Word & Pages, Excel and Keynote.

This would put a real dent in their W8 tablet sales. Enterprises will just buy iPads that can runn office. My company would equip our entire sales force with iPads if this happens.

I've been using iWork for years and am very happy with it. Meets all my needs.

However I'm all for Office coming to iOS, it can only be good for Apple.

Will microsoft ONENOTE ...EVER come to the mac version? i wish i had it so much for typing notes and such at school

actively working?

Interesting, I didn't know that they could work passively too :D
