What's the advantage of this over iWork though? I'm asking from an ignorant standpoint. I really don't know.
There are several advantages as I see it. First, there is a certainty in knowing that documents created on non-iDevices can be read on the iDevices in the format they were intended to be. And edited on the iDevice with the same assuredty.
Secondly, it's a big plus for corporate critters to know that MS Office runs in an iDevice. It's like traveling with your favorite stuffed teddy bear. "Does it run MS Office?" "Yes, it does." "Good, then it's a
real computer."
Don't worry, I'm sure it will be released in 2014
I know you were trying to be funny, but when I read "next year," I got the same sense of foreboding.
Be a godsend if it has equation editor. That's what keeps me from using Pages.
I think MS learned something when they dropped some functionality from MS Office on the next to last version.
It would be interesting to see how this goes, because MS actually put some effort into the Bing app for iPad.
The Mac group ( now probably called the Apple Products group) doesn't breathe the same bad air that affects the rest of the software writers at MS. They have always been a better led bunch.
I don't see any advantage. I could see it on a regular computer but not a tablet. There's only so much you can do with a spreadsheet on the iPad.
Perhaps, but if you have an iPad and you want to do something, it's best if it still can be done, even if Siri was the easiest way to get the formulas and date into the cells, and text into the docs.
This would be a good move by Microsoft. Quick Office, Pages, and Documents To Go all lack some features that are in the full Office, and while I don't expect Office for iPad to have everything in the Mac or Windows versions, it could have more than other iPad apps.
It's good for MS and good for Apple. It's also good for the end user of the best software and best hardware are available together.
So... there shouldn't be more apps then?
Riiiight. That's good for the ecosystem.

I'm not sure where you are coming from, but yes, good software is good for the ecosystem.
iPad with a Bluetooth Keyboard (and Mouse?) hooked up to an external monitor?
ummm... the iPad
is the monitor when you are being mobile.
Why does MS Office necessarily need to have an "advantage?" Isn't more 3rd party support for iPad (and iOS overall) good? I think it is.
Then again, this is a news report on Microsoft on an Apple site... I shouldn't be surprised for the start of negative feedback.
Aren't you guys tired of this PC vs. Mac stuff? I am. Let's move on.
w00master
What the he11 are you going off about? This isn't a PC vs anybody thread.
Not sure why you got "idiotranked" down. Good point.
It was a good point, until his brain jiggled loose and he went into a PC vs Mac rant.
I hope this is true. I'd love ms office iphone/ipad apps. The iWork one's aren't great for reading office files at times.
Same for the Mac app!
Were Pages and Numbers twice as good as they currently are, this is still good news, if true. However, Keynote stomps all over PowerPoint.
