Soooo did Apple earn your respect when they had the same smear campaigns with their "I'm a Mac vs I'm a PC" ads?

I would say it's the same thing but Apple actually went all out berating the competition, B+ list actors, prime time television, dozens of versions, etc.

Apple can do no wrong!!! Lol

It's getting a bit tiring that people keep trotting out this old argument. It's been 5 years since that ad campaign ran.

I actually used one of the 1020 Luminas the other day and It's not bad. The OS does feel immature, but it pretty and feels good. I got lost though, it's a little unintuitive, but I think that is because I am programmed to use iOS every day.

But the quality of the build (plastic), the screen, and the concept is great. I could easily have one but the OS needs to grow up a bit.

Funny, my 4s is made of glass, same stuff as broken windows and it is smashed on the back right now. Irony.

Yep and not only that but some people seem to have a pretty short and selective memory for everything non-Apple.

Everyone's forgotten what windows XP pre-SP2 was like. Viruses were so rampant that all it took was having just one missing or wrong character in a URL and you're done.

Vista came to the rescue, and while it fixed some of the security holes it broke every 3rd party driver known to man.

Apple marketing didn't invent issues. Every one of those ads, while poking fun and making light of users' frustrations, touched a nerve with almost every windows user at the time. One could argue they have another opportunity now with Windows 8 but that's another topic.

To say there's moral equivalency between the PC-Mac ads that ran in 2006 and these ads, or that not seeing their similarities is hypocritical, is laughable at best.

I think it's awesome.

Still not buying a windows phone though.

My apologies for being redundant, but whenever I see "windows phone," I just can't keep it serious. The term is too comical for me. :D

LOL I love you guys. If Apple put out an ad mocking Samsung or Microsoft you'd be all "HAHA APPLE SHOWED THEM GOOD" but it's the reverse and y'all crying.

Let me ask you something, were you guys calling foul during the whole "I'm a Mac/PC" ad campaign? If not, then hypocrisy reigns.

I never saw those ads - I had to google your reference. I didn't have time for television, was busy earning a degree, and was using Linux as my sole OS.

Its quite funny actually how all these companies advertising tactics to get Apple customers to switch actually make fun of them. Like all the older Samsung commercials where they were making fun of people standing in line at the Apple Store waiting for the new iPhone.

Same thing happened when I walked into (?) the "Samsung Experience Shop" (aka, "Apple Rip-Off Shop") in Best Buy. The rep asked "What kind of phone do you have?" I responded by saying "iPhone" and her immediate response was "Ooo, you should get rid of that rotten piece of fruit. Only idiots buy that."

Now THAT pissed me off to no end.

What's you point?

What's the time limit that a company gets a "pass"? Were we supposed to forget that Apple has done the same thing?

Id rather just buy a fresh new Apple tbh. Apple just needs to get Pages to the same standard to be an alternative for me.

Notice how the ad also only says the 4s. So their new phone is only better than apples phone from 2 years ago?

People who have the 4S are renewing their contract about now. Those with a 5, 5C, or 5S have time to go on theirs and cannot sign a new one yet. That's why the 4S is being targeted and not the newer iPhones.

41 megapixels? I don't buy that. Any sensor small enough for a phone that's 41MP probably has photosite so small the images from it are extremely grainy.

I wish people weren't obsessed with megapixels; they mean very little when it comes to image quality once you've over 6 or so.
Mpx are just a bonus. 1020 currently has the best camera among all smartphones and pics are far from grainy.

Since when is Justin Long or John Hodgeman B list?

Oh so you are trying to justify the Apple versus PC ads based on Windows XP performance? I used windows XP from the day it was released and I never had many issues, probably less issues than I do with OSx today. No those ads were OVERBLOWN for marketing purposes.

I think not only is there a equivalency to the ads, this new Lumia as is even more accurate. It's simply stating the fact of having a better camera, is that really what everyone is taking offense at?!? Oh wait, it's the "subtle" rotting apple isn't it? I think if the rotting apple is the sticking point we would want to look more at the visuals of the Apple versus PC ads, the cool, suave, young and hip Justin Long versus the doddering, geeky, pudgy, clueless Hodgeman.

Gah, Apple is far from innocent. But it's just marketing, that's all.

She works for Samsung, are you really surprised? I can tell you some choice comments from Apple store workers when they see my Windows tablet, but I accept them as loyal workers supporting their company.

I used to think that too, but then I got a chance to play around with one. Damn the camera on the Lumia 1020 is amazing. While the high number of megapixels makes it so you can zoom quite a bit without losing much quality, it is really more about the low light performance. I tested it in rooms with barely any light and outdoors at night. Pictures came out much better than the iPhone (that isn't to say the iPhone has bad low light performance, it just isn't as good comparatively). And the fact Nokia was able to stuff all that into a smartphone is impressive. If the iPhone had the camera module from the 1020 then I would be a very happy bear.

It doesn't take 41 megaixel photos either. That poster is misinformed and spreading misinformation. It oversamples the photo.Thats why you can zoom in on the photo after you've actually taken and it'll still look perfect

It's an option in settings. You can take a 5mp oversampled photo, a full resolution photo, or take both of them at once (this option takes longer, but it gives you the best of both).

It's actually a rather good camera; probably the best on any smartphone (though I still prefer the low-light shots on a 920. It's got crazy high megapixels to take advantage of downsampling/zooming. And no, the pictures aren't grainy. It's also "old" technology. They had it on their 808, which was a symbian machine, nearly two years ago.

9/10 (maybe more) of issues with Windows are likely hardware based. Window's Achilles heel (only in terms of comparing to Apple, because this is also a selling point) is that is is loaded on a vast array of hardwares.

The "buggiest Windows" I have experienced to date Windows 7 pro. Know why? I had bad sectors on my hard drive AND a bad stick of Ram (tough luck, huh?) Joe Consumer dismisses this as "Windows sucks, buy a Mac", which is sort of fair, because Apple will help diagnose your problem, for a fee (or while under original Warranty and/or Apple Care). There wasn't such an option, outside of third parties, until MS started opening their own brick and mortar stores.

You are only going to be out of contract if you bought an iPhone when the 4S was king (assuming you didn't just buy outright, or cancel a contract or something). I am willing to bet they would allow you to trade in a newer phone as well. but this is an ad, trying to reach out to the folks who are not currently locked in contract. The 4S crowd is the mostly likely bunch.

Don't get me wrong, Windows Phone 8 OS doesn't really compare to iOS or Android in MANY ways (although they are catching up and doing some unique things of their own). But the dots you connected were done erroneously. They aren;t comparing their phone to the 4S in this ad.

I guess advertising is advertising, but that's tacky. Bottom line is people buy the products that they like, find easiest to use, and complement their set ups.

I have owned just one Windows phone in my life and it wasn't a nice tool. Sure, things have probably improved, but I'm all Apple so the iPhone just makes sense.

Agreed 100%. But the point of advertising is to get people to know about the other stuff. Plenty of people jump on the "OMG free phone" bandwagon.

If I was looking for a "free phone" to replace my current handset (that being the 4S, which is showing its age on iOS7), this would be a pretty solid contender. Remember, people looking for free and cheap aren't exactly power users. Couple free with the best camera on a smartphone and you have the potential for some real sales.

As far as it being tacky, to each his own. I hate bringing up the Mac v PC ads at this point, but fact is many companies take cheap shots if/when they feel it can boost their sales. I really have no problem with it.

Upset? Not at all, I'm all for competition and as you say, a free phone with pixel count that high is going to be an attractive proposition to many folks. Whilst I'm an Apple guy, I'm not closed out to other technologies at all...I had a little N7 for a while as I wanted to see what the Android OS was doing and although I couldn't really work it in to my ecosystem, it's a nice little tablet. Fast, and I had no gripes with the OS at all....my only issue is the screen size but that would apply to the iPad mini too....I am used to my full sized IPad, but I'm always curious about new things...it's kind of silly not to be...:)
