Microsoft has announced that Teams for iPad now supports external cameras, allowing users with older devices to hook up better-quality webcams during Teams calls.

With iPadOS 17, Apple added support for connecting external cameras to iPads with a USB-C port, and Microsoft has just got around to leveraging the feature for users who want to benefit from higher resolution, better dynamic range, and the ability to adjust angles when videoconferencing.

Thanks to Microsoft's implementation, connecting a camera for use in Teams couldn't be simpler. Plug your external camera into your iPad's USB-C port either before or during your Teams meeting, and the app will automatically select it for use on the call. To switch back to your iPad's built-in camera, simply disconnect the external one.

The plug and play simplicity of the support does mean that there are currently no native or Teams controls to manually switch between your iPad's internal camera and an external one. For now at least, Teams will default to the connected external camera whenever one is plugged in.

Microsoft says most webcams that work over a USB-C connection are supported, so finding a compatible model shouldn't be an issue.

I don't get this, I thought this feature was about leveraging an ipad as a viewfinder. Isn't iPad pro's ultrawide front cam enough for video calling? You even get it on a landscape orientation now

Enough for one on one personal calls but in a business setting where you might have multiple people on your end of the teams call it's not enough. Usually conference rooms have an integrated camera that has a good angle on the entire room, this will now allow us to bring just an ipad instead of a laptop to those kinds of meetings

The LAST thing I want to install on my iPad is anything Microsoft!

Outlook is pretty good, compared to Apple Mail, anyway.

Curious if this works on iPhone, too. I do several teams meetings weekly via my company-issued SE..most don't have video, but some of the more important ones do.

I guess it’ll still rip through your battery like crazy. I’m losing about 30% battery on my iPad Pro M2 for an hour of video calling..

It's not electron. The iPhone/iPadOS ecosystem doesn't support electron apps.
Right but pretty much the back end is same and iPad app is worse. As much as I hate zoom, it doesn’t drain my iPad Pro battery like Teams. Unfortunately, I have to use that junk on my MBP. Linux version isn’t any better either.

I guess it’s there as an option if you ever need a much better camera.

For example, in the recent streamer awards, a vtuber, Ironmouse attended the event virtually via an iPad with an external camera rig, which I assume lets her better see what is going on in the entire room. I don’t know what app she is using to stream herself, but I imagine Teams could work in a pinch.

Seems like a useful feature. Otoh: if it was already available in iOS 17, I'd have expected it to be there for at least a year, but nevermind.

I hate that bloated mess of a software with a passion and that this article reminds me that I habe to habenot installed and use it for work. The only thing I hate more is office 365.

great - i hope they also fixed the 90° turning error for webcam images on external display - this has been around for years

Only the recent iPads have a landscape camera.
I’m assuming this feature also works with cameras connected to a USB-C dock, and we have this setup on a lot of desks in the office. Some iPad users may want to work in “clamshell” mode (i.e. with the connected monitor as their only screen, and a connected mouse/trackpad and keyboard as their only input) and now they can also take Teams calls this way too.

I can confirm Teams now properly works with the Studio Display. 90º rotation bug is fixed!

Use teams daily and glad this was finally updated. Took them too long when ipad OS external camera support became available long ago. Think zoom is still waiting to implement it but could be wrong
