Hello guys. So I've bought the new MBP 2021 which comes with Monterey, and I saw some posts on Reddit etc that Teams doesn't work properly on Monterey. Is it true?? I can't try since it's still on the way.

They said they can't have a video call or any kind of video call. Just voice call. If you do try video call it'll crash..

Can anyone who uses teams in the daily with Monterey report? Thank you

I'm running Teams on a M1 Pro with Monterey and haven't noticed any issues at all. I use video calls and meetings most of the day, as well as screen sharing during those. Everything works fine from what I've experienced in the past 2 days.

Thanks for the replies guys !! Still it's sad that it's so unoptimized. Have you guys tried using the web client instead of the app? Is it better?
Yeh it's still using the horrible Electron wrapper and is also not natively M1 supported but these machines have such immense processing power it does run quite well. I'm hoping (and have heard rumors) Microsoft is planning to rewrite Teams. I know Onedrive is getting an M1 binary this year, so hopefully Teams won't be far behind.

I get Electron makes development quick but it's horrible. VS Code and Discord are also Electron apps and they always feel unresponsive and glitchy.

Have to say, Microsoft Apps that have been compiled for M1 like Word and Excel run extremely well on my 14" Pro.

Ya true. I'm really hoping that they release the M1 version this year tbh for Teams too. Although vscode is a universal app now. which really helps prob compared to teams ..

Works fine here with both the Web client and the standalone app. 2017 iMac with Monterey 12.0.1. Haven't tried it yet on my 2020 M1 MBAir. Will report if otherwise

Teams is fine for, I don't live in it just 2-3 meeting a week and a few chats and shared documents.

VS Code has always been very responsive for me.

I guess everyone's mileage differs.

Yeh agreed, VS Code is a lot better than Teams but you can still feel the jankiness of what is effectively a javascript website in a wrapper. Pandora and Discord also feel the same way.

I think Microsoft will have this as a priority - at least the rewrite of Teams into something native on Windows which would be a good start - as they are really pushing Teams heavily with W11. I don't know if the integration with W11 already has a rewritten version. They've already confirmed OneDrive will have a native M1 binary this year which I'm looking forward to seeing as it's always running in the background and I'd like to maximize battery life.

My guess is the reason we haven't seen an M1 binary yet whilst we have for VS Code is because they are already re-writing it. What would be the point dedicating resources to M1 optimize the Electron version of Teams when you will shortly be releasing your much faster and capable rewritten version of Teams?

True. Can't imagine the battery and performance boost on Teams if it's rewritten without Electron LOL. Also the ram usage LOL. .. but yeah I wanted an M1 OneDrive too. It takes much cpu to upload files IMO

I use Teams a lot and when you're used to extremely responsive native M1 apps and then go back and forth with Teams it is jaring.

Microsoft is currently the highest valued public company in the world, to have one of your pillars of your new computing experience going forward be a performance and responsive ****show isn't going to fly. It runs like crap on Windows too. Teams has grown a lot and continues to be pushed in the likes of W11 so they will be working to improve it, the app has a lot of potential. If they can rewrite it + add in full browser video calling for Safari and Firefox it could really take off and also start to challenge Zoom. It's not like Microsoft doesn't have the resources to do a fairly straight forward rewrite.

That's the thing. Tho if it's gonna take them months and months till next year to get a rewritten version of teams. I think they should've released the native M1 Electron based teams from months ago. Since it's so bad. The current app lol

Yup, once Microsoft M1 optimizes Teams and OneDrive everything except for Pandora (which I get free through family) will be natively M1 on my Mac.

Eventually it will happen, I just hope it happens sooner than later. Eventually Apple will kill support for Rossetta x86_64 apps like they did with PowerPC and x86_32. I actually like that about Apple, I know it frustrates some but killing off support for old stuff is what keeps Mac great. Having my iPhone and MacBook only support ARM64 is part of what makes it so fast and efficient. When Apple killed off 32bit x86 apps and I could no longer use Photoshop CS6 I just moved to Affinity which I've grown to really like. So much faster and efficient than Photoshop and they do an amazing job supporting the latest chips, macOS's etc.

Yeh you have a point. OneDrive is definitely coming this year, they are on record saying so. I will just have to put up with Teams the way it is and be happy when Microsoft finally does give us native binaries.

I was actually really surprised at how quickly Microsoft updated their Office suite for M1.

Also I really wish they would put Teams on the App Store. Would make deployments much easier and I prefer to have my Apps update with the Mac App Store. I'm hoping this new M1 computing world with their unified app development will see more good native macOS M1 apps available on the App Store.

Yeah it's nice to have office suite in M1 native. But yeah i just feel like it's taking them too long to optimize teams. I feel like people are gonna stop using it before they updated them lol (the majority of users that use them because of at home work/school/university)

Now this. I hate how teams updates and onedrive actually. If only they have an app to update all of their apps. Oh wait they kinda do. Microsoft auto updater is bundled with office suite too lol. Like why can't they see every Microsoft apps and allow updates from that app? It'd save me so much time to just check and update from 1 app ?

I agree, the way Teams updates itself is one of the worst ways I've seen in a long time. I personally get my office suite from the Mac App Store as it's even better than using Microsoft Autoupdate. Exactly the same as getting it from Microsoft but with less hassle.

Glad you're enjoying your M1 Mac. Which one do you have? I bought the base 14" MacBook Pro 512/16 and couldn't be happier with it. Coming from a 2016 finless MacBook it was like going from a Prius to a Tesla.

True teams auto update is the worst. Like sometimes. The auto update version is higher than the .PKG installer lol.

Anyways I'm still waiting for my MBP to come . It's still on its way lol. I got the 16inch since i like the bigger screen . So nice to have big screen to code + open chrome etc in 1 screen. Believe it or not. I was still using the old 2014 MBA . With 11inch of screen and 4gigs of ram. Yeah it's gonna feel like going from a bicycle to a Tesla LOL. I wanted to upgrade to the 2016 new MBP. But those were abysmal. Then every year I held on since it seems like it's not that good . Since I'm starting to get serious in coding I'm getting the new MBP since it's prob gonna last me 5-7 years too.

That's rough. Yeh it's going to blow you away. The only slight niggle I have with it are the huge slots on the sides for the cooling intakes. They feel quite sharp and dig into your hands when moving the laptop. Not a huge gripe and I appreciate when form follows function. Overall this laptop is incredible and my 14" display feels downright massive. Can't imagine how big the 16" must seem.

Yeh this will last you. I kept holding off as my 12" MacBook was still doing great but decided now was the time. Went all in and upgraded to an iPhone 13 Pro and gen 3 AirPods. Will probably keep all of this stuff for 3 to 5 years.

Yep. I'm waiting for some rugged case like Supcase. I like the rugged feeling . Like even my phone uses UAG cases. Also a plus from using cases on the Mac is well if it's starting to warm up . I won't prob feel it before the fans go and cool it down ?.

Interestingly, as much as I love MacOS. I don't like iphones and iOS. Idk it might change but so far I've been using MacOS with an Android phone. And I love it ?

The performance on my M1 Air is really bad. I use teams as an Edge app now and it has been much better.

I use Teams daily (teaching in business school, running projects, meeting, etc). Mac Mini M1. Teams can be glitchy at times. Few tricks:
- make sure you have updated Teams on regular basis (in app)
- install something like Cloudfire, in case of a problem (I had problems in splitting students in breakout rooms) start Cloudfire with Warp+, then start Teams.

During last year (used to work on MBP Retina 2012) never had a problem with Teams.
