Microsoft giving away things for FREE ... ?

Okay, now I'm a bit freaked out.

I live around the corner from one of the neighborhood commercial "high streets" in San Francisco. I came home today and noticed the awning on one of the vacant stores ... now has a bright blue awning with Windows logos on it reading "Windows Live Portrait Studio".

I have to admit (and I'm aware I'm on an Apple related site at the moment so don't kill me) that it actually seems like a pretty cool idea. I've read the description at the link you gave and it looks like it could be quite good fun and it's completely free as well:

Before taking your free family portrait, savor the fun atmosphere in a stylish contemporary lounge with entertainment for the kids and complimentary hors d'oeuvres and drinks for the adults!

Sounds like a nice little activity to do with the family. Are you gonna go down and tell us what it's like? Think of yourself as an undercover Apple reporter. Don't forget to take some photos! Apple have various events at their stores as well but they're mostly workshops on how to use iPods, iLife etc. But if Microsoft's events give away free food and drinks how can you resist? :D

Big and Expensive

they will sell big a$$ tables

Yes! That's the one thing that no one seems to have mentioned and I forgot about as well. Just like the iPhone's (and iPod Touch's) that people love to play around with in the stores, I think Microsoft Surface could actually be a winner. It's something which really needs to be experienced and so having it in stores, showing off its capabilities, would make sense.

Now if they could just create a version which didn't cost thousands of dollars, fitted in your pocket, had a 3.5" screen, camera and maybe made phone calls? It's probably not technically possible yet and years of research lay ahead. If a company out there could come up with such a fabled device though, they'd be onto a winner ....

I am going to sit and wait on this one. It could turn out to be really good.
I remember when apple was planning on opening its first retail stores a lot of people though it was stupid.

Like it or not Microsoft does quite a few good products. A lot of those products go under the radar.

An example is Microsoft surface. I could see the table thing going a long ways. It is something radically different and I see in a few years it really taking off. Even at the home level. It seems like a great coffee table and hell in the first a desk.

Just a sit and wait kind of thing.

The store of course would have Zune and the Xbox line up. It would have a gaming center in it showing off a few 360s and some games. Halo being one of them. I bet there will be giving out free things for 360 like themes and little add on here and there.

Sit back and wait. This could really work out well for them like it did apple.

They will probably require you to register there, and activate your membership before you can buy anything. They they will ask you if you buy software, if you plan on using it only on one computer, :p
