Screw expanding Xbox to iOS and Android, I want my XBL to integrate with my Steam and play cross-platform, or at least have the same friends list/achievements.

Oh boy, I can't wait for Microsoft to copy someone else's free service but charge a subscription fee for it. Can you imagine? It'll be just like Game Center, but cost $20/year for no apparent reason! How exciting - the possibilities are limitless.

Just like they've done with every other internet service they've ever made. (That's why I will never buy an Xbox: although it has a counterpart for every PlayStation feature, the features are free on PlayStation but have subscription fees on Xbox.)

xbox live has been around for ten years now
game center is a copy and not a very good one either

Xbox is bomb

But...but...but.... this is MICROSOFT we're talking about here... they can't *possibly* do anything GOOD, right? Right?!! Guys....???? right...?

Xbox 360 is hands down the best gaming experience out there! Way better than sony & these silly little apps people like to play flappy bird, candy crush etc.
Although not a fan of windows computers Apple could learn a thing or two about gaming from Microsoft. I find it ridiculous that a $2,000 rmbp has a integrated graphics card & a $500 asus w/window has a dedicated graphics card.

Game Center is junk.

Because Game Center is so compelling, and original. Game Center copied other ideas for how to do a game lobby service, and it's so weirdly designed.

I have only owned an XBox console for current-gen consoles, so I can't comment on how good or crappy PS 3 or 4 is.

This is why I love Microsoft more than Apple (when it comes to services, calm down). Microsoft will do everything possible to get things like OneDrive, XBL, and Office onto Apple devices, but will Apple do the same with their counterparts? No. They're way too proud to even think about going down that road.

Right, because it only took Microsoft several years before realizing maybe they should try and incorporate XBL achievements into non-Xbox mobile games

MS is just as proud as Apple when it comes to these sort of things. The difference is MS needs to expand their services to keep them from becoming irrelevant. Apple on the other hand has no such need yet. And don't even bring up Google, thats the ONLY way they earn money. They don't expand their services because they're such good-hearted angels.

Oh and btw, I think a lot of people are still waiting for Office on iPad. They'll "do everything possible to get things on Apple devices" eh?

The implementation of Xbox Live in Windows Phone isn't that good. Very few games actually support it, and the only real feature it has is achievements. I'd hope that Microsoft would fix it on their own platform first before trying to expand to iOS.

They're all pretty good as far as services and basic features go, but I have to say that the Playstation service offers a helluva lot more bang for the buck.

Like if I subscribe to Playstation Plus, I get free games and a bunch of other perks. Subscribing to Xbox Live? I get access to all the stuff I already subscribe to.

"...because we know nobody uses our mobile devices."

;)

Xbox doesn't have any mobile devices, nor does Microsoft. I can't even imagine what they would come up with... some kind of phone that has Windows...some Windows Phone...thing...

Maybe I hav...nah... I would have heard about them by now...or at least seen one, ever. :p

I have both and Xbox 360 and PS3, and I understand where you are coming from except Microsoft does its online service soooo much better. And they do have games with gold where you get to actually keep your games after your live subscription expires.

I think they are both of good value, and PS4 requires this anyway for online games. I must say though that PS+ has had some great games as of late for free. Borderlands 2, Metro, Brothers, Bioshock Infinite, etc. easily enough to justify its cost.

Microsoft ain't got no game!

The double negative is appropriate. Microsoft has a lot going for it, and with a shift in primary employee focus from justifying and keeping their jobs to making customers happy, they could once again become top dog. Top management could easily make this shift, and perhaps their new leadership will make it happen.

MS cribbed that feature a while back (June 2013). On the 1st and the 16th of each month they offer a free game from their back catalog. Some good, some not so good. <- perspective of course.

I have PS3 and a 360 and liked them both. PS3 mainly for exclusives and 360 for multiplayer. At least on the 360 MS nailed multiplayer. From what I hear not so much on the One. I plan on getting a One in Dec. By then the catalog will be bigger, bugs worked out, and more features will be revealed.

Oh and btw, I think a lot of people are still waiting for Office on iPad. They'll "do everything possible to get things on Apple devices" eh?

Microsoft grew largely by selling Word and Excel for the new late 1980's Macs. In today's world, it's not a good business model when Apple already sells Pages, Numbers, etc. for $0.00. It's tough when your competitor is in the hardware business and you are in the software business, and your competitor provides the software for free with their hardware.

Those that want Office on the iPad are the ones that don't want to take the time to learn new software, or are forced to use Office at the office, and don't want to be using two very different apps that do the same thing.

It has nothing to do with pride and everything to do with business models and philosophy. Apple is, and always has been (with few exceptions), about the one throat to choke concept.

Contrary to the inane and uninformed "big brother"/ "control freak" accusations and similar conspiracy theories, there is a very logical and sound business reason for Apple pursuing this business model, as evidenced by their immense financial success.

It's a very comforting thought for many consumers and businesses alike knowing there's a single company standing behind the whole widget. It also allows Apple to focus on providing the best customer experience, from product to support, and without the shackles of OEM partners, innovate faster in a more coherent manner.

You also have to recognize where the two companies are in the marketplace... MS is very weak in mobile. If they had dominant marketshare with Win Mobile, I think it's safe to assume that they would not consider iOS or Android for most of their products and services. Adn it wouldn't be wrong of them, it would just make business sense.

Actually they have lots of game. Forza, GOW, Halo, etc.:D

And the way Apple is going these days. I might be looking to Microsoft for "Game" when I buy my next laptop.

Not the game I am talking about:)

The entire music player, phone and tablet category had passed them by , before they tried to catch up with "also ran" products.

Balmer never saw anything coming.

Next is probably a Microsoft watch. The Surface X

I just realized I take what Microsoft says with the same interest as a three-year-old telling me what she wants to be when she grows up...

"Oh, yeah?! Really?!? Then what happens!?! Uh huh... Oh, That sounds wonderful!"

and how many of the apps on IOS use Azure as their backend?
icloud runs on Azure along with AWS

sure they missed the consumer end of the cycle, but not the backened. tablets are already being commoditized and seeing price cuts. hard to break into the cloud services market

Perhaps Apple and Microsoft could become partners like in the good old days before Windows. Back then, Microsoft made great software for the Mac and Apple made great hardware. Then Microsoft screwed Apple out to their GUI on a legal technicality to create Windows, and the two haven't played well with each other since. If they started working with each other again, they could own the world.
