I have Microsoft Word on my Mac and it is very slow to open. Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

You're a few months behind. The latest version of Microsoft Office 2016 and Word 2016 is 16.16.15. Office 2019 is also released and the latest version is 16.30.

When you say “slow”, I wonder how slow you mean. It opens more slowly than the Windows version, and always has (at least back to 2001, anyway).

At least once you have it open, you could close documents rather than the whole application, so the next document you open is faster.

HDD or SSD? Bloatware like Office, VirtualBox, LibreOffice, etc. will take a while to start up when on HDD.

To see if memory pressure, bring up Activity Monitor and click the Memory tab, to see if getting into red zone, and what other programs might be bogging down things.

The greatest impact to load times of MS Office for Mac has to do with the storage... HDD vs SSD. MS Word alone is 2GB in size... that's going to take quite a while to load from an HDD.
