Although I am not a big fan of Microsoft, occationally I use WORD and EXCEL. But when I try to load them up they quit while trying to "optimize font menu performance". Now Im assuming that means when you select the font list and it shows you how the font will look.

All my fonts are working properly to the best of my knowledge, Microsoft Office X is all updated, and Appleworks works just fine so nothing really of value is lost - Im just curious to see if anyone knows why this is happening.

That message is a clue.

You should remove any fonts you recently installed. Especially some .ttf fonts if you have added them. This happened to me before, MS Word doesn't like some fonts and crashes at startup.

Have you run the office for osx updater? I had font problems with office in the past and experienced the same thing as you. Plus word or excel took at least 20 seconds to load. After running the updater all fonts problems have been fixed and word and excel now load in 5 seconds or so.
