    Got a Late 16 Macbook Pro 15 inch, top baseline (512GB, i7, 16gb ram).

Considering changing to the i5 iMac, 2tb ssd and 8 gb ram (and upgrading the ram later on).
Any thoughts on this change? For Music Production. Will the iMac perform better for this purpose?

SSD and i7 is not an option at this point...

I would focus more on making music and less on the computer you're using. Or is your current machine not able to do something you need to do?

I'm prone to upgrade-itis myself, but I can do everything I need to do with my current 2016 15". I know how distracting it can be when technology evolves, especially when I just bought something, but what really matters is what you are producing. I know of a grammy winning recording engineer who still uses a non-current version of Pro Tools on his classic Mac Pro. He does just fine.

I agree. I just think I would benefit of the larger screen; and perhaps a bigger harddrive:)

Then I don't think you would need to buy the new iMac. You have an already capable machine. If it's only the screen and storage space you're looking for, then I would suggest getting the 5k external display and an external RAID system.
