As i've already stated, out of my price range.

It's going to be difficult to find an HDD that will work for significantly less than $99. Even a (small) 320GB drive is going to cost $60 new, and there's not much discount for used drives where you don't know the age or provenance. Good luck with that. Personally I think you'd be better off finding a way to scrape-up the extra $40. Mow a couple of lawns or something.

I don't work in US dollars i work in GBP. I got a 320Gb 7200 WD hard drive for 44 GBP delivered, thats 68 US dollars to you. that's a 31 US dollar saving on your recommendation with more than enough storage then i need. I'm more than happy with that. It's not about what i can afford to spend, it's what i'm willing to spend on a 4 year old macbook, i wasn't willing to spend that sort of money. Don't condescend me either.

I wasn't being condescending, just suggesting that you may want to reconsider missing out on 12-15 second boots, instantaneous opening of your most commonly used apps, and an extra 430GB of space for $31. Didn't seem like a wise tradeoff to me - if you plan on using the computer at all and your time has monetary value.

If you reboot thrice a week and keep the computer for six months, the boot time savings alone is worth 1.2 hours of your time. Is that worth more or less than $31 (plus interest) to you? Obviously not.

No biggie, just sayin' is all.

How did the transfer go? You up and running again?

Transfer went fine, hard drive was a doddle to fit. And as i thought initially i booted into the recovery section and installed mountain lion that way which was great! The hard drive does seem to access things quicker and the temperature of the system in general seems to be cooler, despite the body of the mac feeling hotter than i remember. Glad i went for the 7200. cheers for your help again!

If you want a lot of space, I'd recommend a 1TB drive. I also have a 2009 MBP, and I put a Samsung 1TB in around a year ago and I love it. Sure it's 5400 RPM but I haven't noticed any slowdown whatsoever. As long as you have a decent amount of RAM (I have 8GB), then it will run fine.

Sweet, good to see that you got everything working. The cooler internal temps but hotter body sounds right. Anyways, you might want to edit our first post on the thread (use the advanced editor), and add a resolved prefix on it, so people won't keep posting on it.

Cheers!
