Mid 2010 MacBook Pro Boot fro USB

I've been looking all over the place for a way to boot from usb on my MBP Late 2010. I've tried rEFIt but nothing seems to recognize any of the usb drives I make with dd, unetbootin, or windows utilities.

Apple probably never built that particular feature into their firmware.

it will only boot into an OSX GUID partition.
