Have a mid 2010 macbook pro and when loading a normal usb stick to install an osx like yosemite, mavericks, high sierra it loads a little progress bar goes up about half ways of half and just stops the activity light of flash drive is doing nothing. I tried another motherboard, the motherboards by the way are used pulled working according to ebay seller he even sent me another motherboard i got today and tried but same exact issue. I also redone the usb sticks different osx's, another hdd, pram reset function, but same issue. Anyone know what could be? I haven't tried another ram stick yet because i didn't know i had another laying around but i just found a 2gb stick i can try the one i been trying with is a 2gb stick too.

Are you trying to create a bootable USB installer?
OR... are you trying to install a copy of the OS -onto- a USB flashdrive?

These are -two different things-.

For the bootable installer, you'll need 8gb or larger.
For a completely "bootable-to-the-finder" copy of the OS on a USB flashdrive, I'll reckon the minimum you need is 16gb. 32gb would be better.

Use a larger USB stick. 2 GB is too small.

What I meant is it has a 2gb ram stick not that I’m using a 2gb usb stick. The usb stick is a 16gb.

No the usb stick 16gb is already created I use it to to install fresh OS X on other MacBooks, iMacs etc. again this issue is happening after the steps of inserting usb stick hold down option key select the usb install disk and right when it’s loading the install disk the progress bar goes up to about 25% and just stops no more reading and writing from usb stick.

So i tried another ram stick same issue, tried another hdd cable same issue. crazy just dont know unless two straight glitchy motherboards i got. Making another fresh mavericks usb stick now with transmac on windows like i usually do.

Try installing the os on an external drive.

Yeah I can try that and just say that’s successful can then remove the hdd from the usb case enclosure throw it in the MacBook like normal and it will just boot requireing no changes?

Correct-copies of OS X "transplant" very well.

Just to prove a point, I've taken PPC Macs with OS X Leopard installed, booted them in TDM, and then used that computer to boot an Intel Mac via Firewire. All installs of Leopard are universal, whether off a retail disk or a "gray" disk(system restore disk) and despite claims to the contrary Macs retained the ability to boot off an APM drive until relatively recently.

There should be zero issue installing OS X on one computer and transplanting the drive to another computer that will support that version of OS X-it's something I've done more times than I care to count. In fact, I'm typing this from a Mac Pro running a Snow Leopard install that was cloned from a MacBook 5,2. The last retail release of Snow Leopard was 10.6.3, and the processors in my Mac Pro need I think 10.6.6 or so to work-the easiest way for me to get around it at the time was to clone what was a relatively "fresh" install on that particular MacBook.

Actually i did try installing it on an usb drive yesterday and tried right now again but still no go, you see the issue is its not finishing the bootup of the usb osx install flash drive it stops at around 25% of loading. it does this issue no matter if a hdd is plugged into the macbook cable or usb. I even installed macosx onto a usb hdd like we talking about through my 27 inch imac other night and that was successful and when i put in that new fresh install on the macbook pro it just stops booting kind of like the main issue where the usb stick osx install stops.

You've changed the motherboard so the replacement is bad as well, another component is defective, or you need to load snow leopard which is the original os that came with the machine?

I know just seems still bad board because tried all kinds of troubleshooting still no go. The eBay seller is sending me 2 more boards he doesn’t want negative feedback or do a refund he’s a new seller with just 10 feedbacks. We will see what happens.
