So I'll be using my MBP to do whatever and all of a sudden the screen will go totally black and the computer becomes completely unresponsive. If any media was playing - audio will rapidly skip. Fan remains on and keyboard stays lit (if it was lit) - but the computer is dead. Only thing I can do is hold down the power button to force it off and then turn it back on.

Then I get the now all too familiar "your computer shut down because of a problem" or whatever it says, when I start up the computer again.

This can happen at any time when I'm doing just about anything - it happened a few hours ago when all I was doing was chatting on gchat on gmail....had a few tabs open. After I restarted the computer, it happened within minutes AGAIN.

It happens most often either right after or soon after I've clicked on a video online. If I'm watching something or have any program full-screen, this will happen within 15-30 minutes practically without fail. sometimes much sooner. But like I said, it can happen when I'm not even watching a video at all.

I tried to get this fixed at least once before. I brought in my MBP into the genius bar somewhere between 8-11ish months ago and told them of my issue. They did a OS re-install and replaced my RAM. I didn't immediately notice, but the problem gradually came back and has even gotten worse.

Stupid me I didn't go back there before my apple care expired. (it expired in may).

Any thoughts on what this might be and if there's anything I can do? I'd hate to pay hundreds to get it "repaired" only to find out again that it's not really fixed.

It's more than 3 years old at this point, time to buy a new laptop?

A guess: Your Mac or display is going to sleep.
Set sleep to "never" in preferences for both power & battery;
Make sure your screen saver hot corners don't include "put display to sleep".
Might prevent the problem. Let us know!

Sounds like you may have the known 15" Mid 2010 GPU panic. Do you get any report screen when you boot it back up?

The 15" Mid 2010 MBP had a known issue where it would randomly go to a black screen and the only way to get it back up is to hard power it off and boot it back up. Apple does have a warranty extension for this issue, you may want to have them check it out.

Check out this link for more info

chevelleguy3 - that may be what I have! but darn! they'll fix it for free up to 3 years after purchase. I have exceeded that - my 3 years was up early May (along with my apple care).

Every time I boot back the laptop, I get the report issue to apple icon (that also says your computer shut down due to a problem).

Do you think they'd charge me a lot? What's the fix for this, does anyone know? I've been living with this for over a year. I actually went to the apple store to get it fixed last July (I looked it up) and they replaced the RAM, but that did not fix it. If I didn't have Apple Care, it would have cost $310 for those repairs that did not work..... ugh..... I guess they should have replaced the graphics card but they did not. Silly me for not getting back there before my apple care expired, but still!

rc135tx - it's not going to sleep.

GermanyChris - how do I check my logs? would that help any??

i think its time for a new mac unless you want to pay 400 for a new logic board. Try to go up there, theres a chance they might fix it for free

It's your console in your utilities folder..

It kinda keep a running log of whats going on down to absurdly short intervals...

The console should tell you what was going on the moment it froze.

I don't think it's time for a new computer, it's time to look and see whats actually wrong with yours. Your computer is by no means old don't throw in the towel just yet.

here is the report i get - just happened again

Well, you're suffering from the popular Nvidia GT 330M Kernel Panic issue that plagues our Mid 2010 15" MBPs on 10.7 and 10.8. I assume you're on Mountain Lion. One workaround is to downgrade to 10.7 and install all the available updates (10.7.5 and SMC updates, etc.). I'm doing just that (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1630088/).

Another solution is to stick to the integrated graphics. Use gfxcardstatus for that. However, the developer's website is down. Search for "gfxcardstatus mirror" and you'll get a MacRumors thread with mirrors.

Raptor

I had the same issue and had to go to Apple to replace the whole mainboard under that graphic problem for free.

It was still within 3 years though.

Here you go: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

If your purchase was less than 3 years ago, take it to the nearest apple store / authorised repair center and ask them to look at issue TS4088. You are eligible for a free Logic Board replacement, as huythanhv2 said. If they refuse, email Tim Cook. I heard that helps a lot.

Regards
Raptor

How do I install/use gfx card status? I downloaded a mirror but I can't figure out how to install or use this? There is no DMG..... it's a folder full of stuff I do not recognize. seemingly no instructions to be found??

I don't think I have any install disc - is it easy to downgrade? will it not mess with any of my files at all?

So I guess apple has zero plans to release an update to fix this????
My MBP is PAST 3 years I've said a few times in this topic - bought May 2010. Damn.

also I most certainly DID bring it in about a year ago - a little more actually and described my issue. I guess they had ZERO clue about this and thought the issue was my RAM - so they replaced that.problem came back and so should I have gone to the apple store....but I did not.

probably not worth the $200-500 or whatever Apple would charge to fix a more than 3 year old laptop? I mean they charge hundreds FOR LABOR TIME alone. sucks that apple won't fix defective laptops even if thy were purchased more than 3 years ago. defective is defective.

Why on earth would I ever buy another mac again? although sadly I probably will because that's the ecosystem I'm used to now

I really appreciate all of your replies! If gfxstatus will sort of "fix" this problem I'm all for it. Can anyone help me install this?
