Mid 2010 (15) MBP i5:
Removed the battery due to swelling, waiting on a new one. Backlit keyboard not illuminating and no option for illumination in keyboard settings. Is this normal if I don’t have the battery installed?

So your machine running normally except for the backlight keyboard lighting? That doesn't seem normal, but MBPs often don't behave well if at all without batteries.

thanks found it; it’s connected I disconnected it , reconnected and did a restart, still no luck. Maybe I need a keyboard replacement 😩
Seems like the swollen battery may have damaged the backlight.

Unfortunately, replacing the keyboard means removing everything from the bottom case.
