    hey guys,

I was just wondering if other people with a mid 2011 iMac are experiencing slow downs? I think the problem is that I only have 4GB of ram, but I do find it odd that my iMac when I have nothing but activity monitor running in using like 3GB of my RAM. Is that normal or should I be looking into what's causing that more deeply?

Maybe it's a faulty GPU in the machine? - your machine could be affected by the iMac mid 2011 AMD video card replacement program which sadly expired last year.

Reason for mentioning this, is my machine also felt very very sluggish with slow downs, after a while I started to have graphic driver errors in photoshop, illustrator etc. - wierd looking graphic issues in my canvas and sadly this morning... my machine is dead.

wasn't aware of the recall of the imac machine, so Apple support wouldn't cover my machine, since the warrenty had expired.

So Just my 2 cents of sadness, since I'm stuck this morning with a defective metal bucket with a fancy apple logo on it...

...and ironic enough, 1 year ago, my macbook retina died of a faulty GPU card... oh well

Man that is horrible! I am sorry man. However, I believe that recall was for the 27 inch and a different graphics card that I don't have. I have the smaller screen iMac. I hope it's not the CPU, but I believe that can be swapped out so I could potentially fix that problem.

Thanks for the information about that recall. I also didn't know about it until now. I'll see if my RAM upgrade fixes the issue.

You are *very* vague on what is slowing down your Mac. Give us more information so we can actually help you out. My 2011-mid iMac is a speed beast.

Well, what I know is that applications take forever to load sometimes. Firefox in particular always gives me a spinning wheel when it loads up. Sometimes when my computer reboot's it does give me some trouble. Meaning I have to turn it off and turn it back on. (I do have two profiles on my computer BUT I don't have any applications that start up when my iMac turns on). At that point I was thinking it could be my hard drive, because that did fail and it acted similar. But it didn't do that exact problem again.

But it is still very slow when it turns on. Like I will log into my account and I hit the launcher (or go into Finder) and the applications aren't loaded yet. I have to wait a minute or two to be able to find any application not on my dock.

It's these types of problems I am having. General slow downs when trying to use the computer. Some of these problems I do think RAM could be the issue. But some of them I don't think is RAM.

    Thanks!

What you are describing is not a RAM issue, but the fact that you have a HDD (I assume) in your computer. Upgrade to an SSD, and all those things will disappear instantly.

That's right. Upgrade to an SSD and you won't believe the difference.
