So at this point I am running Sierra on it and the fan is almost always on and its just overall really sluggish..
Is there anything I can do that will improve this or is it basically bye bye and upgrade?

I had a 2010 and it was also a little sluggish. Sold that and upgraded to a 2012 and I'm getting much better results.

But my 2010 was never overheating, and it wasn't "really sluggish," just sluggish enough to bother me.

At times around the top left of the keyboard it gets so hot its almost unholdable. I may try a full reinstall of the OS and see if that helps.
