Ok so instead of leaving the phone how it was (a typical looking Apple designed piece of art where it was all white or all black using ONE material), they break it up like this?

This has already been hashed over for months now but your entire premise is wrong.
Original iPhone -- two colors, two materials on the back.
Original 3G iPad -- two colors, two materials on the back.
iPad 2 3G -- two colors, two materials on the back.
new iPad 4G -- two colors, two materials on the back.

If you don't find it attractive then say so but claiming how un-Apple it is is simply ignorant.

Bugs have antennae, electronics have antennas. Sorry it just bothers me to think about bugs everytime I see the word.

This is a LOT different than the new iPhones.

Besides this 2G the other were all one material *(or at least looked like one material)

The original 2G can be forgiven because it was their first phone. Meaning materials were much different in 2005 and it was the debut phone. But even that one didn't have a top and bottom piece. It only had a bottom piece. They obviously didn't think that design was the best and future iterations were all one color/material. Sleek and uniform.

So yeah exactly what I "ignorantly" said. The back of the new iP5 is not characteristic.

Nope those are aluminum all the way up and down (in typical simplistic Apple design fashion). These new ones are broken up by this band. Look how there's only a little but of white left. The ALL white iP4/4S was much more like an Ives/Apple design. This was definitely an after thought or serves a purpose.

All iDevices that use some kind of an antenna, BT Wifi EDGE and 3G, do not have aluminum over the entire back. The first iPhone, for example, had a black plastic bottom. Personally I don't have an issue with the two-tone back on the 5, and I like how it integrates with the antenna seperating lines.

Why does it matter so much? They left the top and bottom openings open so they could insert a piece of glass for the antennas.

LOL...thanks for the correction. Didn't realize.

Btw, they had an all chrome aluminum back on the 3G. Even that would've looked better than this.

What?!?!? What 3G are you talking about, because my iPhone 3G was plastic.

Either he doesn't understand, doesn't want to, or will never accept your answers. I commend all of you for continued effort.

This picture shows how the device is unibody, but the glass is inserted top and bottom to allow the penetration of cellular waves.

If you still dont get it. IDC, because Im out of this thead!

All that I care about, is that I hope it works. All this un Apple this that, and the other thing is just stupid whining, and by the end of the day, its still stupid whining that means nothing. ;) :p

Job has mentioned the classic Leica cameras as design reference for the iPhone, so it certainly is not out of the question for a two "bands" of different material design.

I gotta admit the back of that white 5 looks like hell. Upper line is cut way too close to the camera and the white top and bottom sections just don't blend well with the aluminum back. Very poor aesthetics.

2005? The first iPhone came out in mid 2007 and I can assure you that there were the same materials then as there are today.

Design has received really good reviews from all the pre-release reviews I've seen so far. In fact I'd argue the hardware (design/internals) is getting better reviews than the software is.

My head is going to explode. No iPhone had an all metal back. The idea was to come as close to all metal as possible but the glass has to be there for the antennas to work. I don't know what's confusing? It's less breakable than the 4 and 4S without the all glass back.

Well whenever it was 2005/2007; irrelevant. We're talking about previous and current designs. Previous poster mentioned that all the iDevices had 2 materials covering the backs of the devices so I was just pointing out that was incorrect.

----------

When it comes right down to it, now that its on the 5, the middle band is a very Apple thing to do.
But not typical and not Ives' final decision IMO. As they have been quoted as saying they wanted ONE material on the back but they couldn't do it because they needed a spot for the antenna signal to pass through so this is a compromise. Future iterations will be one material on the back when they find an appropriate material or they will think of a new antenna solution. I guarantee you.

No, I only mentioned specific ones that did.
You were the one saying that a 2-tone, 2-material back was unusual and you were wrong.
Don't rewrite history just because you're wrong.

It's very characteristic. When you look at the trend of all the Apple products to the "unibody" design, the iPhone 5 has followed. Apple has an obsession with thinness, durability, and right now aluminum products. If they could have made the whole back aluminum, i'm sure they would have. Since an all aluminum back would render it unusable as a cell phone, they did the next best thing.

As far as your comment goes about waiting for a new material - it's not like there are hundreds of new materials suitable for manufacturing a cell phone discovered or created every day. Who knows, maybe they ARE working on creating a material for this purpose but it is not ready yet - so they worked with what they had.

Don't rewrite history just because you're wrong.
For example, the iPad 3G and iPhone 2G aren't two tone "designs". It is one tone with a strip at the top (compromise). Two tone implies it is intended for design which it wasn't. It was a compromise for the antenna. Past 5 years never had the strip except on a 3G iPad. Again not an intentional design choice. Choice out of necessity. They wanted one material on the back which means they did not want to use these signal passthrough strips which means it wasn't their intended Apple design which means it's not typical for Apple. I think not typical = unusual.

Job has mentioned the classic Leica cameras as design reference for the iPhone, so it certainly is not out of the question for a two "bands" of different material design.

Now that is a classic design. I have owned several.

Btw, how can an iPhone be not apple like? It is by definition.
