Jailbreaks/IOS Hacks
I've turned to creating a thread with a bit of a special request for those of you who still have a black/slate iPhone 5 or black/slate iPad mini 1 kicking around, but also have one of the more recent Midnight iPhones.

Can someone please put these 2 colors side by side? I have spent over an hour trying to find a photo on google of real life, non-render examples of both colors side by side.

It's upgrade time for me and as someone who got silver/white with the iPhone 5, I have been chasing black/slate every upgrade since. I got close with the matte black iP7 but not quite slate still. I unfortunately do not have a slate device laying around to take in to compare with the midnight iPhones and don't know anyone else who still has a 2012 iPhone or iPad anyway besides myself... of course my entire iOS lineup from 2012 was white/silver.

Guess nobody has a 5 still.
I have a 5. I just do not have '…one of the more recent Midnight iPhones.'

Midnight is definitely an interesting color, it really depends on the lighting and what else is around it to compare it to. If you have nothing else to compare it to when indoors, it looks black...but when you put it next to a black object, it might look dark blue. When in really bright light or outdoors in the sun, then the blue comes through even more.

So to answer your question, I'd say it's closer to black when inside, and closer to dark blue when outside. I used to have a slate iPhone 5 many years ago and it doesn't remind me of the slate color, nor does it ever look gray-ish. The dark grays or black colors were usually my go-to choices too, but I have to say midnight is my new favorite color.

I don't have a slate colored device to compare it to, but here are some photos of my midnight. All were taken just now using the same lighting conditions indoors (ceiling light/no natural light), except for the last one where I also shined a bright flashlight on it. Also for reference, the background is black and the iPad Pro is space gray in the last two photos.

Thank you for that last photo! Definitely too blue for me. Sigh, One of these years maybe slate will make a comeback. Seems they're really sticking with midnight now, though space black gives me some hope.

How are your 5 chamfered edges holding up ?
Doing just fine. However, some considerations.

This is my FOURTH iPhone 5. First was replaced for a bad speaker within three months, the second for battery swelling and the third for battery swelling. By the time I had the third one replaced it was 2017 and I was in to my second year with a newer iPhone.

So, this particular iPhone 5 is only five years old and has never been used as a primary phone. Most of the time it's just on my desk. Not much chance of wear on the edges.

iphone 5 slate black colour is nice...
That is the primary reason I waited an additional year from 2011 to 2012 to upgrade from my Sprint HTC Touch Pro to the iPhone. I was gutted when the 5s was only available in Space Gray. And while most of my later devices have now been Space Gray it's only because it was the closest I could get to black (for those models), not because I am fond of Space Gray.

I'm 2 years late, and this isn't exactly what you asked for, but I'm dropping this photo here for anyone who wants to know how the Midnight MacBook Air compares to the Slate iPhone 5. As of September 2024, there are 0 relevant results on Google Images, so this might be the first one. (I took this photo at a nearby m:zone a year ago. And as a bonus, you also get to see how the Space Gray 5S compares to the Space Gray MacBook Air.)
