Did anyone hear the TWiT podcast? Leo [expletive deleted] hates the Mighty Mouse! He's usually a subdued guy, but see how he went off on the mouse. Another example of Apple over-engineering. :p

really? that's very interesting to hear... so it's not the MM's fault after all?
Yep. I hadn't thought about it in a while since you mentioned it, but especially some flash ads seem to be trouble. The scroll wheel doesn't want to work if the pointer happens to be over one.

I just bought a Mighty Mouse today, but what I really wanted was the single-button white mouse that they have now discontinued. I have a Logitech MX700 wireless mouse that I love but I thought that it had quit working all of a sudden; it turned out to be a problem in my powered hub inside my Dell monitor, and it is now back working again. The problem I see with the MM is that the scroll wheel seems to be awkwardly placed (it hurts my hand after only a short time) and it also seems to be erratic about working; this latter may just take some training on my part, but the former could be a real problem. I am using it with Panther so I don't get the extra features, but I really don't need or want them. I haven't installed any software (I don't think there is any to install for Panther). So far I am reserving judgement until I have used it at least a few days, but my initial impression is not positive.

MMee 2!

I will be taking my second faulty Mighty Mouse to the Apple Store and getting something more reliable. First MM scroll wheel stopped working UP or DOWN and second MM stopped scrolling UP... whatever - sounds like it's becoming a common problem, which Apple is unlikely to acknowledge until the number of returns enter the thousands - maybe...

Solidarity brothers!

I've been having problems with my Mighty Mouse also. Like you, loved it when I got it (and still would if it worked properly) but now it randomly activates expose and/or dashboard. the cursor also occasionally jumps to the other side of the screen. And it's got nothing to do with the way I'm using the mouse or accidentally triggering the buttons.

Ah, that is very interesting! I have a very cheap OEM wired USB optical mouse. It is a microsoft-style 2-button mouse with up/down scrollwheel. I also get the randomly activating expose/dashboard and jumping cursor problem. I put it down to dodgy firmware in the mouse itself, but it soulds like this is a driver problem rather than a mouse problem from your description.

I have a revB Mac mini. The first 5 digits of the serial are YM528. It is running Tiger 10.4.3 (but I had the same with 10.4.2).

Please followup in this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/161877/

Sadly, that's the risk we all take with any electronic product, but especially with first generation apple products. I'm going to wait until the RevB MightyMouse
What are you going to consider a Rev B Mighty Mouse? Apple may have already introduced manufacturing changes to fix the above issues and you wouldn't know it just from looking at the mouse or its box.

Companies will tweak current products when a need arises. Consumers don't find out about most of the tweaks at all.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I have gone through THREE faulty Mighty Mouses. I'm starting to wonder if maybe I'm too hard on the scroll wheel, but I've had other mice with scroll wheels for years with no problems. The pro mouse my Mighty Mouse replaced has been used nearly every day for the past 2 and half years.

Maybe the Glendale, CA Apple store received a bad batch? Am I the only one?

Fishes,
narco.

This might sound a bit silly but is it possible that the Apple store is giving you the shaft and handing the same mouse back every time you return it to get a "new" one? It's kind of odd to get three bad mice in a row (though I guess not impossible).

Bad luck anyhow. I'm more than happy with my trusty old Logitech optical 3-button.

My main 'beef' with the MM is the two clicking buttons, they just dont work properly, if they had two seperate buttons (so you dont have to take one finger off to click the other button) then it would be fine.

Bought a Logitech MX Laser cordless rechargeable mouse and L O V E it. :D Apple's mice have always sucked!

Not only is that my complaint - it's also not ergonominc to have to lift the other finger.

The MM isn't optical, correct? That seems crazy to me given the proliferation of cheap, optical mice. Am I mistaken?

Yes, I had the scrolling issue too on mine, although sometimes the scrolling worked and other times it didn't. I also had t he problem where exposé/dashboard was randomly triggered, but I think that's because my heater is right under my desk...probably not too good of a place to be while using a heat-sensitive mouse. I switched back to my Kensington Mouse-in-A-Box Optical Pro which I bought for around $10-$15 a few years ago. Still works fine.

I would say the vast majority of users lift their fingers off the mouse completely, (or just the inactive finger), before clicking and don't realise they are doing it.

Anyway, since the new iMac G5 came into work, I have used it a fair few times now and I love the exposé feature on it, it just makes it so quick switching between open apps.

I stopped using Mighty Mouse and went right back to a Logitech mouse. When I move an item from the folder a to folder b using MM (holding down the left button), I often press down the middle part or one of those side buttons which triggers Expose. The OS freezes because of these weird button coordination I managed to pull off with MM. When I move the file from A to B, I have to grab the MM to move on the desk (usually my fingers grab the sides of the MM, where the side buttons are located). So, MM is now retired to serve me as a temporary mouse in event my Logitech/MS mice break down.

Also, MM's cord is annoying too short.

i have the same problem, this mouse sucks in my opinion, its another triumph of style over function which equals bad design. And more importantly its not even good looking.

huh? how is something a "triumph of style over function" and "not even good looking" at the same time?

for the people who have the problem with the mouse jumping around randomly...

it is the surface you are using the mouse. put something underneath it that has a different pattern and see what happens.

I guess January would be the time when apple announce the BT MM. That's the one that most people seem to be after and I know I would buy one. SInce they are bundling MM's with all new iMacs and PowerMacs, (and pushing the seperate sales much more too, for Mac Mini etc), I would have thought the next logical step would be the BT version of it, before they either phase out the single button mice, or turn them into a niche item.

I thought that they already HAD phased out the single-button mouse (at least the wired one). That is why I bought one from eBay after I returned my MM. I could have had a local store order it, but they would have to order it as spare parts and so the price would go up.

I've had two of these "bad mice" in a row myself, and I pulled both of them off the shelves myself, so they're definitely not giving ME the shaft. Hopefully I'll just be able to return it for a refund. I just got a Macally Dotmouse today to replace it until they come out with a more reliable (and perhaps even Bluetooth-capable) version. For now, the Dotmouse was 20 bucks and works beautifully.

touch scroll

it would be way cooler with some sort of touch sensitive scroll sorta like the ipod scroon wheel- the entire top of the mouse could be touch sensitive which the finger used to scroll up and down. NO scrolling sideways though - that sux!

I tried a MM out in the Apple store, and I didn't care much for the scroll ball. Whenever I pressed lightly on it, the ball just sunk right into the mouse, unlike the more traditional scroll wheels that can withstand the weight of my finger. How does everyone else feel about the scroll ball?

I love my Mighty Mouse. I hope it doesn't break.

The scroll ball is great except it can be too sensitive at times. Like when I used firefox it kept going back to the previous page when I scrolled down a page (due to the side scrolling being so sensitive).

So I changed to safari and it's all good now. (except there's no tabbed browsing  :( )
