Hello,

I decided to switch out my old mac mini (late 2009) which currently works as a media server, running mainly plex, plexconnect and som other software, with a 2008 Xserve since transcoding certain media files was starting to really push the limits on the mac mini (and also i got the Xserve dirt cheap). I also find it slightly funny that the xserve performes on par with my stock 2012 15" bmp :)

From what i've learned the maximum supported OS X version on the xserve is 10.7.5, which really is ok by me since all the software i want to run supports it. But then there is the issue of migrating... The Mac mini currently runs 10.9. Is it possible to migrate all programs and settings from 10.9 to 10.7.5?

Has anyone done this?

Would you rather aim to install 10.9 (it's possible with 3'rd party software) and do the migration, or just stick with 10.7 and re-install everything if you cant migrate stuff "downstream"?

I'd be grateful for your thoughts on this!

My experience has been you won't be able to use Migration Assistant to go from new to old (move 10.9 to 10.7) and you will need to manually move everything over to the 10.7 machine.

Thank you for your input.

It turned out that the, by far, easiest way was actually to do a clean install and installing the needed applications one by one from scratch.
