Hi all,

I'm still waiting for my rMBP to ship but what would be the recommended way to transfer my data and applications from my old MacBook Pro to the retina model?

thanks

Ensure your existing machine is running the latest version of Lion and that you have an up-to-date Time Machine backup, then just do a Restore to the new machine.

Migration assistant will sort it all out for you.

As said above Time machine is probably the best option in this case. Last time I upgraded I connected both machines to the gigabit ethernet network and did it that way which took about 4 hours. I wouldn't fancy doing it over WiFi as it would take an eternity.

could it be done through thunderbolt? is it faster then ethernet? 4 hours still sound too long for me

I don't know, probably not. I used gigabit ethernet which is good for around 70MB/sec. The 4 hours was for a nearly full 250GB drive.

I agree with the above posts. Only thing to remember is that when moving house, some house cleaning is needed. I find shedding some files and progs makes the transfer even more pleasant 🙂
