Samsung's messaging app is not iMessage but don't think I would say it sucks. There are also a few good alternatives which are pretty good. I would admit if SMS is big then yes iMessage is one if not best messaging clients.

Yeah I hated Samsung’s I just got rid of my s8 about 2 weeks ago in favor of the X will be getting the x in the mail tomorrow

I like the notifications on Android.
Notification light
Samsung Pay (Not an android thing but like it)
Being able to set up events based on actions, locations, etc.
Customize home screen
Widgets - a pro and con honestly. I wouldnt want it on iOS but do like a few of them on android. Some are just a mess.
Those are just a couple examples. I can live without them but at the same time do like them.

Widgets put me in a quandary. On one hand, it adds some variety to what is normally a screen of app icons, but then again, after you read the widget, they just become something you scroll through.

Yeah I just didn’t no if you were talking about tweaked apps like free music and movies and stuff I was gonna say there’s still a way on iPhones.

I asked my friend the other day what that flashing red light was, he didn't really know but guessed it was for notifications. That is a pretty cool trick I have to admit. I would like something like that, but it's not a dealbreaker. A lot like a lot of these features on both phones - would be nice, but definitely not a dealbreaker. The reason people stay on one platform or another is being able to message others on the same platform. iOS has the advantage in that regard since you can message Android folks through google chat/voice in iOS. That's just Apple being Apple though, pulling a trump and keeping everyone outside the wall. I use iMessage much more than any other message app because I know mostly iOS people. Wonder what that says about me.

See and the fact I can change the color based on what type of notification is nice. I use blue for email and green for text. I do wish my iphone had this. I tend to pick my iPhone up much more to check too often.

There are many messaging apps in the google store. OP would not be locked into the stock Samsung msging app.
Drawback of switching between platforms:
Say good-bye to your Whatsapp messages. Whatsapp on iOS only backs up to and restore from iCloud, while Whatsapp on Android uses local backup/Google Drive. You cannot interchange the backup data. Same thing with Line.
Rather than "switching," why don't just have both phones and enjoy both? Nobody tells you to only use one of the other. I use both iOS and Android. Don't see why one has to limit oneself to one platform.

- headache from apps that run in the background and drain battery
- headache from apps that have been killed by your battery saving features and no longer deliver notifications
- headache from apps that looks worse than their iOS counterparts, and apps that just look outright terrible
- headache from app icons that don't have a unified design language but all show up on the same screen
- headache from not knowing the difference between the 4 separate volume sliders, and why your apps can still play sound after you mute all of them
- headache from your phone mysteriously slowing down over time
- headache from constantly muffling the single bottom speaker
- headache from the duplicate apps from Samsung and Google that you also can't uninstall
- headache from the Samsung logos that all look the same and you can't tell which is e-mail and which is message
- headache from the inability to transfer files quickly between any two device, other than an full PC with USB cable.
- Drooling for all that shiny new Android updates available on the Pixel devices, and new Android devices, but not your Samsung.
The S8 plus would be the one I’d try if I jumped ship now. I just have way too much invested in apples ecosystem since leaving android around 5-6 years ago.

I went the other way. Had Androids since the very beginning with a few windows phones (Nokia’s) and BB thrown into the mix. I’ve had many different makes of Android phones through the years (and still have a Hiawei Mate 9). Many Samsung’s from the S4 all the way to the S8 (my last Samsung).
In July I bought my first iPhone (7 Plus) and a month later a 10.5 iPad Pro.
What I can tell you about my experiences is that the iPhone (and iPad) is the best phone that I’ve ever had (for my uses and needs). It works. It works 100% of the time. It works right out of the box. It’s the fastest and smoothest Phone that I’ve ever had (and the Mate 9 is a screaming beast but ip still better).
Samsung makes good phones (hardware wise). They are beautiful phones no questions about it. Android offers a ton of customising options also, however, for me, that’s one of its downfalls.
When I pick up a Android Phone now it’s like “what the heck is this mess”. It feels all hacked up and pieced together because, well it is.
The apps are a crap shoot. There are certainly good Android apps available but there is a lot of pure junk.
The iOS apps seem much better to me. Comparing the same apps that I’ve use on both platforms.
The Apple ecosystem is great. I can start browsing on my phone and put it down, walk into the other room, pick up my iPad and start browsing the same page. Same for messaging, SMS. It just works and I don’t need to “download an app for that”. Get use to hearing that phrase in the Android world 😛
Anyway both platforms are good and bad. For me and my uses and needs Android just isn’t my cup of tea.

Every Samsung that I’ve ever had (a lot of them. S4, S5, S6E, S7E, and S8) has started to stutter and lag relatively quickly (and I’ve seen no sign of that on my iPhone and iPad yet). Also if timely updates are important to you, you’ll only get that on Pixels and Google phones, generally speaking. iOS gets timely updates everywhere in world, reagardless of carrier.
Anyway that’s a few of my 1 cent thoughts.

Who is saying Apple is not Apple? I also disagree that either is clearly the best option. Just as their are multiple iPhones each year we have different phones to meet our needs. The iphone is not the phone for everyone.

There is a good bit wrong here or at least things that can be fixed if they bother you. That is why I like android sometimes. If something about the software bothers me, odds are there is a way to change it. That does take time and for alot of people they don't want to dedicate their time to that. Heck that's why I started using Macs in the first place. I didn't have the time to worry about my computer. I just wanted it to work. Some of those statements are right and I agree with.

I really didn't like Samsungs stock messaging app. The notifications were fine and replying without going into the actual app was cool, but it seemed pretty buggy to me. I tried Verizon's messaging app and one other one that was highly recommended, but neither had the notification customization I was looking for. I really wish Google would get their **** together and make a good messaging app.

Yes I'm sure if you download ODIN, install Samsung drivers, flash a custom recovery, trip KNOX, disable DRP, download a custom ROM from XDA from a site that constantly begs you to buy premium membership, load it onto your phone with a USB cable, flash the ROM, clear the delvic, restart the phone, install superuser, restart again, install Xposed, download some hacks, download a wakelock detector, use the phone for a week to detect suspicious wakelocks, mess around with some text editors in the root section of the system, change come file permissions with a root browser, uninstall some system apps which may or may not break your system etc....
eventually you can fix some of those things.

Most of these things aren't entirely true. I have iPhone X, but I admit Android Oreo is a better, more complete OS than iOS currently. Samsung screens are amazing. Maybe the X is a bit better, but not enough for it to really make a difference. Sound is kind of a personal taste thing, as most people use headphones (S8 has headphone jack, so that's a point for the Samsung).
Going from Apple to Samsung is like going from Mercedes to Lexus. It's more a matter of personal taste and uses over any HUGE quality difference, especially since Samsung hardware is really nice.
Haha. I remember doing most of this and then praying on re boot that I didn’t brick my phone. I did this with my old toshiba tablet too. Some of it was fun, but I usually ended up tweaking more than using it for a regular phone/entertainment device.

Same here Man I had galaxy s series 1-8 and notes 3-5 a couple years ago i was the guy that said I would never own a junk iPhone my gf talked me into getting a 7 and I really liked how it didn’t lag. Although I did miss a few features so I went to. Galaxy s8 that a very nice screen. And then the iPhone X launched so I jumped to it. Will find out if I like it when I get it tomorrow.

I've had a Note 8 for a couple of months and experienced no lag, and honestly couldn't tell you what is different in Facebook between iOS and Android. That is coming from years on iPhones and last two years on a 6s+.
There is nothing wrong with the default Samsung messaging app. There are other choices if you don't like it. I like most of Samsung's software. The issue with messaging is that iMessage is proprietary and drops back to MMS for non Apple devices and MMS stinks. This is the biggest annoyance with Android, if you message with a lot of iOS users. My whole family has iPhones but we have worked it out.
Zero of the things on your extensive list have been a problem for me on the Note 8.
To the OP, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Note 8 and Gear S3 so far. It's the most fun I've had and most excited I've been with a smartphone in years.
Apple will need to really do something significantly better than the X to have me moving back to an iPhone.

I have a Note 8 and the S3 frontier.
I just don't have the issues that others are complaining about.
Battery life is great, I can message who I want, I send vids and pics via WhatsApp.
Great camera, great screen, fast, if not faster than the X at certain tasks and doesn't have to reload apps quite as much as the X.
No ugly notch and slimmer bezels.
Much nicer for media consumption imo.
I haven't had an i-devices since Apple charged me for firmware for my iPod touch years ago.
Can't see that changing anytime soon.
I've only used Android and primarily Samsung.
But there's a whole lot of other brands out there to choose from, I'd have the LG V30 if I didn't have the Note.
Then you have the pixels, the Huawei's, the Sony's etc.....
There's so many out there to choose from.
I'm going to be biased towards Android, I'm not going to deny that.
There's no argument that will change that, I've watched all the videos and read all the arguments but IOS does nothing for me and I'll not buy a phone from a company that doesn't make their own products.
I just don't have the issues that others are complaining about.

Yeah well the note does have a lot more ram then the s8 so I’m not sure on that one as I didn’t have experience with it.
You can't lose with the Note 8. Might take some time to adjust to if you haven't used Android before, but it's pretty much a worry free smartphone.
If you plan on trying to replicated how things are done on iOS, then don't bother leaving the iPhone.
