I started a migration yesterday from a 2008 MBP to a new 2012 MBP with a firewire 9pin. It is not even halfway done and it has been 25 hours!!

    Is this to be expected?

I am afraid to touch it for I would hate to have to start over.

Keep in mind that the 2008 has been very slow as of late and I am migrating over 160 GB of stuff. (17000 photos)

Should I hang tight? Should I pull the plug?

Please advise... my wife and kids are about to pounce!

    Thanks

25 hours for 160 GB of data is very slow, even with 17,000 files.

Maybe stop the transfer and do it manually, especially if it is only the photos your are interested in.

Or do the photos manually, then back them up, then delete them from the old Mac and then try Migration Assistant again.

You can use the following applications to benchmark the speed of your HDD / SSD, to see, if it is the culprit:
