I will be upgrading to a new iMac soon, but I may have a little problem with transferring my old computer settings/files using Migration Assistant.

I think my Firewire ports are going out on my old computer.. I used to have a external Firewire HD, but it started losing connections and unexpectedly quitting. I thought it was the cable at 1st, but replacing it didn't work so I actually took apart the Firewire HD enclosure and put it inside my computer as its second HD.

Could I use the Ethernet port for the Migration Assistant? Also I do have a wireless router and I am wondering if maybe I could use that to transfer everything over?

No expert here, but it does ask for a firewire connection without giving another option. Networking with ethernet is an option, maybe not for migration, but just copying.

Maybe it will hold out long enough to transfer
