I just got a new MBP and want to migrate my system from my 08 MBP. My old comp has been backed up to a Time Machine backup on an external drive. I have 10.6.8 on my old comp. I'm looking to partition my new MBP drive (750gb) into a smaller 150 drive for Windows and the rest for my OS X. I've never partitioned a drive before. Do I need to do this first then do a time machine backup?

When I move everything over using Time Machine, does it keep everything the same? Will my OS X version be the 10.8 or will it be 10.6? Thanks for the help guys!

Yo don't need to partition your Mac before using TM, and if you do, make sure to use Boot camp Assistant for that.
As for migrating, it will work okay, and your system will stay at OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, as Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard does not even have drivers for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

thanks for the info! is the migration assistant the best way to go about doing this?

also for Windows and partitioning....will Bootcamp setup automatically allow me to partition any space thats left on the drive when I'm ready to install windows? I've never done this before

Yes, bootcamp will handle partitioning.
