Migration Assistant Problem

I bought my wife a new MBA M1 and trying to use Migration Assistant to move her data from an 2016 MBP. Whenever I try Migration Assistant from the MBP to the MBA I get a connection error, even though the MBP shows up as a source. However, if I try Migration Assistant in the opposite direction (MBA to MBP) or even from my own 16" MBP Migration Assistant works perfectly. It simply won't connect going from her old MBP to hr new MBA.

What could be the issue?

Is her macOS up to date. If not, it might help to update.

Alternative, if she a timemachine-backup, you import from that.

Thanks for replying. I ultimately gave up on Migration Assistant and went the target disk mode route, which worked just fine. Wish I knew why MA wouldn't work.
