Migration via time machine or old hard drive

As mentioned in a previous thread yesterday, my IMAC crashed the other day. I pulled the SSD out and am planning on using it as an external drive for my new Imac I just purchased; If I am understanding, since I am going from a 2008 to a 2017(I have Sierra on the old machine), it may be buggy using the migration assistant? Is this correct? And if I use migration assistant, will the newest OS not be installed as well as some other newer things in the 2017 that I don't have in the 2008? Should I just attach the old SDD and drag and drop things from the old SSD over to the new computer instead?

My understanding of the migration issues are that they result from the quirks of HFS+ vs APFS in the migration from Sierra to High Sierra. I think the migration assistant might be worth a try, and if you have an issue with it then do a clean install of High Sierra via USB and then migrate by attaching the old SSD. There are plenty of guides online as to how to do a clean install of High Sierra via USB if you've never done that before. I personally recommend macworld's article.
