I would not advise swimming with that band - get a sport band for that - great material for swimming with.
Why not? That band is fine even in saltwater.

Manufacturing note by apple on the product page on Apple’s Store - “band is not water resistant”
Sure - with that said why not use a sport band which is much more appropriate for swimming? Seems like a lot of work to ensure you treat it properly when there are other bands that are much better at that job. I’ve also seen threads on Reddit that for exercise swimming that it can be tricky to keep it tight in the water to keep the heart rate sensor functioning properly. Again don’t know because I use sport bands in the water.Apple has the put that as a disclaimer, Because they can’t make any guarantee’s, but by all means, you *can* use the stainless link and Milanese loop in the water. It’s all about proper care with rinsing it off with fresh water and drying it off, and issues will arise. And I can tell you firsthand experience from being a stainless band owner.

I thought it’s only the black band that can scratch the watch? The gold version doesn’t seem to scratch the back or screen.
Technically, the regular and gold stainless Milanese loop can still scratch the casing, because it’s metal on metal contact. It’s the black stainless Milanese loop that can scratch the Sapphire display, because it equally as hard with the diamond like carbon coating that is exclusive to the black Milanese loop.
I would be worried about swimming with the revised Milanese band simply because it can now open up completely and the magnet has a tendency to slip.
Did the band come with your Series 4 watch, or did you buy it separately?I’m confused on this. My 44mm gold band does not do this. I can’t get the magnet through the loop. Also all the Milanese straps on Apples website say not suitable for swimming anyway. I don’t think the Milanese straps are water proof like the watch.
Did the band come with your Series 4 watch, or did you buy it separately?
If you purchased it separately, it's likely the 42mm version.
The current 44mm and 40mm Milanese bands opens up because the magnet can pass through the slot on the other band, reportedly so the watch can lay flat on AirPower pads.
Apple recommends wearing the sport loop in a different orientation for swimming because of the motion a swimmer would make could cause it to fall off. With the Milanese magnet as loose as it is, and now being able to pass through the other band, I would never swim with it.
My band came with the watch. I stupidly left the grey protector muff over the watch while connecting the strap. Then tried to slide the magnet through the loop to avoid having to remove the strap again but mine does not go through. I wonder if there are two batches.

I don’t know where the falling off hype is coming from. Maybe swimming would be different.
Mine goes through, but not without perfect alignment and some force to push it through. Try again.
Okay. With some force it will go through. I didn’t try so hard previously.
A) That’s why don’t understand the worry about that it opens by itself.
B) Series 0 to 3 couldn’t be pushed through.
C) I love my Milanese. It’s looks great on all occasions. It breathes better outdoors and during exercise than sports band. Since series 0 I have not managed to scratch my watch.
