I'm thinking about trying to develop apps but most of my ideas are military centric and the content is restricted to military personnel only. Is there a way to restrict who can download the apps from the store? or possibly have a password built in that military personnel could e-mail from their military e-mail to receive access? Thanks.

You can write enterprise apps that are distributed privately - more info is on the apple developer site.

Rohlo what military info are you trying to put in the ap? You mean like gps maps of baghdad or training schedules or what? most of that stuff isnt secret. I am military so you sparked my interest as what you could possibly be putting in there that is sooo secret.

Aside from the above-mentioned Enterprise apps I don't think there's a way to restrict who can download an app. However, you could have the critical content be provided dynamically from a server under some kind of username/password system.

I'm not entirely sure how Apple views this kind of app. They don't like apps that have functionality that appears to be present but isn't present, as in demo apps.

I have ideas of trying to put aircraft information in an app as study material for pilots but that is official use only type of stuff and i don't think i can just put it out there for anyone.

thanks for the responses. doesn't sound like there is a really good option.

Well, pretty much all field manuals are for public consumption so long as the "public" knows where to aquire them. I'm pretty sure working on non-secret aircraft is civilian work aswel. So I would assume if the documents you are sourcing from do not say top secret or eyes only, or confidential or you had to sign the book over to yourself and then sign it back in then It would be perfectly legal to put it in an app. Besides if the app is only for you then whats the worry?
What you should do is check the internet and see if the manuals you are going to be siting are out in the open market. If they are and you can find them from another source then you are golden. Besides your saying that you want people to be able to use their AKO or military address to get the app. Lets put it this way, if you are saying that as long as any person is in some branch of service whatever it is then THEY can download your app. If your willing to go that far then I Would bet some hard earned cash that whatever it is is public knowledge.
