Here's another thing to think about: Do you ever have to run to the store JUST to buy a gallon of milk? If so, this service will more than pay for itself, even if it costs more than the store.

How do you see that working? Somehow the math in my head suggests that it is cheaper to run to the store - except for all the extra crap I end up buying.

I live in the Houston area and pay close to $4 a gallon for organic whole milk. I'm assuming free-range direct deliver is pretty much organic, so $3.25 sounds pretty darn good, especially delivered.

The premium cow's milk brands that are organic / free-range around here are also $3.49-3.99 at large grocery stores, Walmart, etc.

It sounds like a win all the way around. :)

Er, yeah.....I just noticed my mistake in my OP. The price is $3.25/half gallon. We are currently paying about $2.50/gal for the generic, $3-4/gal for branded, and about $6/gal for organic (unless you overpay for Horizon). So it would be a little pricier than what I said before. Of course, we are getting screwed on milk any way you look at it. If the organic was $3.50-4/gal around here, that's all we would buy.

Wow, I'm embarassed.

I remember home delivery in glass jugs. I also remember at least one time the milk froze and broke the jug!

And home made ice cream...
sometimes made with snow
(you had to put the dog on a leash!)

I remember those things too, and I grew up a 50-minute drive from your location. :)

Don't feel bad, I think I said something silly too. Now that I think about it, $3.50-4 is half a gallon of organic/free-range milk here (e.g., those Horizons cartons are 1/2 gallon at about $4).

But then in essence, it's still about the same as store-bought free-range milk.

I suppose you could always subscribe to half a gallon, and then use store-bought milk for some things? That way, you get the recreational outings, and the experience, but you aren't spend $20 a week on milk. :p

Well...based on your original posting of $3.25 per gallon, I was assuming that the store milk was maybe 50 cents cheaper? Wear and tear plus $2.75-$3/gallon gas probably plus whatever your time is worth pretty much outweighed the savings in my book.

BUT since we are now talking about twice as much per gallon...it's NOT monetarily worth it. Unless you like their milk (Try it and see. We had a dairy in Central PA that people would drive for miles to buy their milk.)

Ah - I see your point. I've gotten so coddled by the grocer being a couple miles away, that I don't even think twice about running over for a "couple" of things. But, you do make sense - even those short trips do add up.

Can I ask where in central PA this place was? I'm in Frederick, MD, so south-central is just a hop/skip/jump

I think that is what we will do, but to the tune of 1 gallon a week (about 50% of our consumption). I figure we can fine tune that as needed down to 2 or 3 a month, but that should keep us from dropping the good stuff into indirect consumption.

hahaha I did the same thing! I just checked and my whole milk is in half-gallon cartons. Whoops.

I guess in reality though $6.50 for a gallon of their milk is equal to two half-gallons of organic from the store which would be close to $8.00.

This whole thread got steered off course LOL... OP next time type gallon or half-gallon in bold print! :p

It was good, you didn't have to go out and get it!

I wish I could have eggs, milk and delicious, delicious bacon delivered to my doorstep.

I just buy the Walmart milk. It's too cheap not too. $1.68 gallon. Sometimes I will get the local Creamland Dairy milk that tastes a little better but costs about $4.50/Gal.

Well...about a 3 hour hop/skip/jump from you...State College, PA. Meyer's Dairy.
