Thanks.. you can go online and look for a light pollution map to see if there are darker skies nearby. Like this one:
ProRAW is cleaner and sharper than HEIF or JPEG because it doesn’t add noise reduction. No need to touch to focus, just aim and set to 30” & the iPhone will do the rest.
Now I'm curious to try this out with my 11PM, see if shots are any different since the software is working differently.
That WOULD be interesting to know. I actually thought it was a 15 specific thing, but it could certainly just be changes in iOS 7. Not out of the realm of possibility.
I have several third-party apps that I use for general photography. No third-party apps except for Even Longer will work for long exposures. I do use Even Longer to get great shots of star trails and long exposure shots of the night sky. Other than that I’m starting to use the native camera app more often now because the improvements that have been made in the software and image quality from the 15 pro max. Of the third-party apps that I do use, I like ProCam by Moment, Halide, and NOMO RAW
I mean realistically I would want to be able to set the timer on night mode to 1 second increments instead of 3, 5, 10, and 30 and write a shortcut to do interval shooting on that setting and stack them in Sequitor. I need to replace the battery in my remote so that I can try this out....
Nice shot! ProRAW or HEIF? The 5x camera will not do anything for you with getting a detailed image of Jupiter. If you have a telescope, attaching the iPhone to the eyepiece will be the best way.
If you mean see with your eye, you can't see stars and the Milky Way like these photos because your eye can only capture light for about 1/30 of a second at a time. These photos are taken with the iPhone's camera that's able to capture light continuously (without refreshing) for 30 seconds.
Wow.. based on what I saw, HEIF looks great. The stars are nicely pinpointed and clean. A definite sign of how good the 15 pro / max 1x camera sensor is.
The 11 pro max was the first iPhone to have night mode. The sensor is smaller and I never got good results using mine when I had it. Your efforts Are paying off. Do you plan to upgrade to the 15 pro?
Yeah we're looking at upgrading Black Friday. The 11s are starting to exhibit stutters and general grumpiness as they age and the oldest is on my old 8+ so she can't even update to 17 now. So we're all getting phones and she'll get to purchase her first one. Not sure what the wife is planning on but I'm definitely getting a 15PM. That 5x optical will come in handy for sure and I can't wait to test out the 1x on night mode for comparison. If I can remember to do so and the weather permits, I'll take a last night mode shot on the 11 before we leave to upgrade and take another with the 15 the following night.
From what I’ve seen there is a pretty noticeable difference between the 14PM and 15PM when it comes to astrophotography.
You can use the radial tool on the Milky Way like this screenshot to adjust the exposure of the Milky Way. Adjust curves and black levels to accurately adjust the sky etc.
