I'm really excited for the improvements to Minecraft. Cross-platform is fantastic. But I can't get on board until there is a cross platform macOS version. Until then I will not let go of my Java version. Sorry, get on it Microsoft.

I just bought the Switch version, I'm looking forward to getting an update that will make it the same as the others! Right now it doesn't have infinite worlds, and it sounds like this should fix that as the iOS version does.

Also getting it for free will be nice, although I wouldn't be too happy if it wasn't.

That said, I hope that the java one still gets updates or is still able to be downloaded, the SUES shaders really make the experience completely different. I wish they had that level of mod support in the new Minecraft, but alas, they seem pretty restrictive on that.

Of course the Java edition is still supported, in fact they have great plans for it.

I haven't heard about those, but I'm guessing the two will never meet? The big problem (from my perspective) is that the cool stuff has been done on the Java side, including all the huge player communities. Even if Microsoft replicates that (via purchase) on the C++ platform, will it ever really be the same?

I know there is an open-source effort to create a PE server (one of my friends runs one of these servers that's in the top-10). But, when I go to play there, it's just missing too many of the features to pull me in. And, since they reverse-engineered the server, they'll always be playing compatibility catch-up unless Microsoft changes their vision.

I'd love to see the Java version get some new-life or for Microsoft to make the C++ version more like the Java version... but I think it's a numbers thing. There are simply a bazillion more people with mobile devices than PCs setup to run Minecraft. And, that's not including the consoles as they go the direction of tying in with mobile (further boosting that platform).

I think they're just looking to expand feature-wise. I don't think cross-compatibility is coming in any way, and something like that may only be worked on when feature parity is achieved - something that they are really trying hard to make happen. Regarding the mobile/console direction they're going in, it is an unfortunate fact and we see Apple focusing their attention on mobile as well because that's where the money lies. I've felt for a long time now that Microsoft have been treating the mobile/console editions as the primary game and this. They're dumbing down of the game is frustrating and honestly insulting to players of all ages. Getting that age group onto computers and wanting to use them to play Minecraft was a good thing.... I know I am talking like they've killed off the Java edition but with the direction they're going in, it feels like they will once all versions reach feature parity. I don't think it can be the same with Microsoft involved.

re: mobile - Yes, and I don't care so much if they were the same or played together. I hate playing on mobile w/o a controller (can't handle the touch interface), but I guess I could see it being a similar experience for most people if the mods and servers were possible.

So, I guess I'm not anti-mobile, but I feel there will come a point where they'll just let the Java version die off once the C++ version gets established enough. I'm kind of afraid, though, that if they remove the community aspect (mods and user-run-servers) the game will eventually die.

Too bad half the players on the PC version seem to still be on 1.8.x since everyone hates the 1.9 changes to fighting.

It's kinda dead. I used to have all the mods and stuff, and things aren't getting updated as much now. The server-side mods are especially dead.

Official 4K HDR support and improved lighting, shadows and water effects. In Minecraft. What a time to be alive, lol.
There have been mods for this in the PC version. Tried on my brother's souped up Mac Pro. It's great.

No missions. You just build stuff. Not my thing either, but some people really love it. I have a nephew who has built a small city in the game and he will play for hours and hours.
The game has two bosses, so you can kinda count killing those as missions.

Well I am curious cause I always wanted to buy one, but if it was just plain building (even If I can see the fun of it)it would really put me out.

Now with the switch version I got again that ...must try feeling, but don't want it to be a short lived title...

Anyway thank you all for your feedback, it was really appreciated!
You can also join servers which have mini games built into them. Like bed wars. You and a team have to protect your bed from being destroyed and try to take out the other teams beds. There are others where you have a time limit to build an item, like a drawing game, and then the other people in the game vote on the winner. Plenty more to do then just build.

Yeah I've seen those SEUS shaders and similar. I would only play fairly heavily modded on my MBP back then, and it was already laggy enough without adding shaders to the mix. But I just think it's pretty crazy that it's officially supported now. I secretly hoped but never thought they actually would do it because it changes the look of the game so much. It makes sense that they're adding it more as a mashup pack sort of thing. The performance should be a lot better than the java version since it can natively access the hardware to do all of the effects.
