I'm going to be buying my 7 and 11 year olds Minis for Christmas. Am I understanding correct that the only things different between the two is the 3 has Touch ID and ApplePay?

They have the same processor and retina display, correct?

Am I missing anything?

Your correct on your assessment, only add the fact that it also comes in gold color option. That's it!

I myself bought a refurbished iPad mini 2 from the apple online store for a whole lot less for a 64gb model.

I would guess the best deal then is Target's $100 gift card with purchase of iPad Mini 2 for $299. Net cost of $199 + tax.

Yes, and ApplePay is only in-app, not in-store at the terminal, like the iPhone 6. The Mini 2 is a great deal right now.

I just faced the same decision. I was looking for an iPad Mini for my kids and I got them the iPad Mini 2.

I also bought a bunch of play money, and when they exercise (we're a family of avid runners) or do jobs around the house, my wife and I pay them with "Play Bux". They can then spend that play money on minutes of iPad time.

If I buy a Mini during the Holiday season, it will be a Mini 2 hopefully for $199.

Also if you are buying new, the rMini 3 is the only way to get 64 and 128GB. New rMini 2's tap out at 32GB.

As a minor and temporary footnote, some non-Apple authorized dealers still have Mini 2 64gb models in stock. Probably not for long, though.

I'm planning on getting the Mini 2 for my eight year olds. Twins so that means that I have to buy two. Plus it's time to upgrade my iPad 4 with and Air 2. The deals will be very much appreciated.
