Mini 2018 - eGPU PS upgrade - XFX RX 5700

Well, today's project...

Upgrading my Sonnet 350 by putting in a 550W Revolution SFX power supply and updating my graphics card from RX 580 to a RX 5700. It booted right up to login screen perfectly.

I have not stress tested the GPU yet to see if it's stable but it seems to work okay, so far.

Ah, it must be scaling. macOS is rendering a 5K image and then scaling it down since you are using a 4K display with the “looks like 1440p” scaling option.

I'm thinking of a macmini 2018 for my photography (lightroom/photoshop/helicon focus) and video (fcpx) needs.

How much noisy is an external eGPU box like the Sonnet? Will my eGPU be recognized without problems in macmini 2018 with Mojave/Catalina?

Depends on what eGPU you get. My Sonnet is pretty quiet. You just plug it in and it works. There is an issue with RX580 (Polaris) and Catalina, at the moment, so I would avoid that.

I noticed you're running your setup with an LG Ultrafine. How are you getting your GPU to run the LG Ultrafine? Did you use an alpine/titan ridge card?

I have no issues with the GPU and LG. I am using the HDMI cable that came with my monitor.

He’s not running an Ultrafine display its just a 27” 4k LG display.
