Need to buy a new ipad, flip flopping between the air and mini, I know the air has a great battery but is the mini's battery holding up after a full year of use ?

Mine is not used often (I use the 10.5 and 9.7 much more), so it's mostly plugged in. It has only 27 cycles in one year and 87% health. Still decent compared to my mini 4 that has 77% heath.
I really don't know if had used it for several hours a day every day like the mid-sized ones, if it would have more or less health than now... (my 9.7 pro has 97% health with 230 cycles....don't know why...)
When new, the minis are always the ipads with the least battery life, followed by the 12.9, while the mid sized ones are the one wiith the longest battery life.

I've had mine for almost exactly a year now. I'm not a heavy user, but I do use it in preference to my phone for armchair browsing.

When working, it spends most of its time plugged into my Mac to show my CCTV camera views. It's usually unplugged for a couple of hours when I'm on my treadmill (showing said CCTV views), and also in the evening and during my lunch break.

According to the CoconutBattery app, its current charge/full capacity charge are 4,889mAh with a design capacity of 5,124mAh, whatever that means. And it shows a 95.4% figure beneath "design capacity".

The cycle count is 102.

Anecdotally, I don't feel like it needs charging often, but that's probably because it's plugged in most of the day so is always "topped up". The other day I had it doing the same as usual but it wasn't plugged into the Mac (I was doing some iPhone work instead, so the USB port wasn't available for a couple of days) so the battery did go down. Eventually, one evening, it did start giving me battery low warnings, but the battery seemed to crawl from 7%, to 6%, to 5%. I didn't feel any urgent need to plug it in.

Hope this info is useful to you.

Since we don’t have a clue how most devices are used in real life it’s hard to guess from somebody else’s battery on the one in your own iPad.

perfect

keep in mind between usage and massive capacity batteries, there are fewer cycles than there would be on an iPhone that is constantly used.

my mini 5 is holding up as if it were day 1

Minimal battery life differences are probably far from the biggest differentiator between the two devices. The Mini has a smaller battery for a smaller screen, so in the long run they’re very comparable. It doesn’t hold the device back in any way. Just choose the one that feels right to use, they both have great battery management.

Thanks for the replies, I own a first gen mini with over 1500 cycles, if I can get that kind of use out of the mini 5 I'll be happy to spend my money on it, 256 gig is $550 at best buy. Here's a battery health pic of 1st gen mini.

iMazing has labelled mine average. 313 cycles, 87% health. Bought early April last year and used heavily as it is my only iPad. I probably use it more than my phone actually and rarely turn on the laptop.

Don’t know if you need cellular, but this one is in stock at Apple refurbished:
