Just realized that I have to wait to use the mini as a remote. No lighting plug attachments yet from L5 or similar. Maybe some time soon.

Griffin beacon connects to your phone/iPad via Bluetooth and beams an IR signal. You can program buttons if it doesn't have your device preinstalled

All of the problems listed above can be rectified with these two things - except the lack of physical buttons. I wouldn't be without my ipad / irule / gc wifi2ir setup. I have been able to put multiple remotes in a drawer and customise every aspect of my setup, with functionality that you can't get from the original remote

Thank you for the rec- this is what I was hoping to hear.

The physical button attribute of a regular remote won't be replicated, but if Apple allowed lock screen controls for univ remote apps, much like music apps, it would take a little of the hassle away and make for a better experience. Add volume or channel control via the physical volume buttons and now we are talking.

I would never add a dongle, but am encouraged with the wifi-ir converters. The harmony link transmitter is very impressive- no need to place it in front of your equipment or use ir dongles. It somehow bounces ir signals off the walls- I didn't think it was possible until I hooked it up. I would have 5 of them in my house but last I checked, not multi room capable. Plus the way to turn stuff on and off is a lil wanky.

Definitely looking into iRule and compatible hardware- everyone peg Scott For.. er someone at apple to allow for lock screen remote controls...
