According to the user review at Newegg for the new MDP to HDMI adapter there is infact audio out over the MDP....

i'm not so sure because even apple said they get audio to the 24" LED display over USB.....

He mentioned audio pass through for the Mac Mini. I can tell you that I don't get any audio when using the display port to hdmi adapter on a unibody MBP.

My tv has DVI in also, i guess i'll stick with that then
 
thats awesome.. i wonder if something is different between the macbooks and the mac mini... because i swear remembering someone trying it on a mbp and had no audio...
 
I believe, at this point, it comes down to this scenario:
1) The Display Port (and Mini Display Port) *specification* supports audio.
2) The current generation of Display Port *hardware* doesn't support audio.
