Hello, New to the world of Mac. Just bought my first one. Mac Mini 2.3 i7. Plan on getting dual monitors but they had to order the 2nd one in but I did go ahead and get mini display port to dvi adaptor to be able to hook 2nd monitor up.. Anyways because of the research I have done before my purchase I know of the HDMI issues so I decided to hook monitor up through mini display port. Then figured I would get the apple update and then when the second monitor came in hook it up using hdmi adaptor that came with mini. When first powering up white screen with apple logo then black screen and monitor went into sleep mode. So I switched monitor over to the HDMI adaptor that came with Mini and works great. Tried to switch it back and same thing, Monitor goes into sleep mode.Doesnt want to display anything. Its a Dell E2311H monitor and the mini display to dvi adaptor is apple. Is there something I need to change in settings for it to work or maybe a bad cable? Maybe bad port? Any help would be great!!
    Thank You

I have a similar intermittent problem as well. I have the same spec'd mini as yours, and bought an HP 2311xi (23" LED IPS). Monitor image is great, hooked up through the same port as you, and when the computer goes to sleep or when it first powers on, the monitor loses the signal from the mini and goes into a black screen with an error message. After it finishes booting, though, the monitor will begin to work properly (and on my new SSD drive, boot time is about 4 or 5 seconds, so no big deal).

If the computer is in sleep mode, just hitting a button on the keyboard will wake everything up, including the monitor. Don't know why it won't allow a screen saver instead of a black screen. . .

I read somewhere that this particular monitor doesn't play nice with dvi port, and has this occasional problem. I'm hesitant to try the HDMI cable because I heard that dvi is better for text, and this is my work computer. (HDMI is supposed to be problem free on the signal loss issues).

I might give it a try if it keeps happening though.

I have the same monitor with the same problem: putting the Mini to sleep makes the monitor go into an error mode where it keeps looking for a signal. The only solution is to turn it off.

There was another model of this monitor where you could set it up to NOT look for the signal, but this does not seem to be in the menu of the 2311xi.

I ended up using the HDMI-to-DVI connection which works fine. The monitor goes into sleep mode when the Mini does. And the text looks just as sharp to me as it did using the Mini display port.

Aside from this problem, what a great monitor!

Cool, I'll try the HDMI connection!
