Need a real good technician to answer this

Hey,

I wonder if it would be possible to use my LED cinema display with a PS3 if I use the new cable from monoprice ? Behind the back of the Cinema display, there is a single connection cord that splits between a usb wire, a mini displayport and a magsafe to recharge my 13 inch unibody macbook. On my ps3, there is an HDMI entry.

So, what do you think ? I must say that I am completely lost...

I'm not familiar with the outputs of the PS3, but even if the adapters worked, how would you get your audio?

I'm guessing that it won't work. Not sure if the Apple LED can take a 1080p signal.

That sucks, they should at least offer you a refund or credit. I think the other Kanex USB+HDMI model is even worse so I don't think you really want that... it's only two channel audio... not even 5.1.

I wish I had seen that earlier... I ordered/received the Monoprice one - Keep reading for that experience...

BTW, this won't make you feel better but it's a long standing fact that Toslink optical doesn't have the bandwidth to support the latest HD uncompressed audio standards so what made you believe they had somehow magically solved this problem?

I knew this, actually. I was hoping that the USB portion of these adapters would be for more than just power. On the Mini Displayport+USB+Toslink adapter, the USB is power only - A fact that Kanex did not initially state on the product's ORIGINAL page. The product page went so far as to state that it passed uncompressed audio formats such as TrueHD. It has been modified since to reflect the fact that it does not do this.

Sorry to hear that Osip :( So it is as we guessed and they do not actually support HD audio codecs. So, the only real benefit of an adapter like this is to have audio and video on a single HDMI connection - a fair offer except that the price is Very high IMO considering this is the only gain. Ah well, sorry you had to be the lab rat to find this out... but you have saved the rest of us some $ so I thank you.

$100 and I have to say that's a small consolation. ;) Thanks for the sympathy, though. I haven't given up on the Monoprice adapter as I'll discuss at the end of this post, but I have shoved the Kanex one into my laptop bag for now.

I'm not familiar with the outputs of the PS3, but even if the adapters worked, how would you get your audio?

BINGO! I doubt the 7.1 uncompressed audio would make it through this exchange.

I'm guessing that it won't work. Not sure if the Apple LED can take a 1080p signal.

The LCD will just upscale it to the max resolution as it would any other signal fed to it. I'm sure it'd take the video, but at the loss of the surround audio.

And now, the next ordeal...

I'm definitely curious to hear some reviews of the monoprice adapter... no driver required for multichannel audio output?

I was out of town over the weekend, so I just now started playing with the Monoprice Mini Displayport + USB adapter. In Snow Leopard, it's 2 channel only. In Windows XP, the same. I'm thinking/hoping that this is merely a driver issue that can be resolved by some resourceful soul out there. Windows XP is installing generic USB Sound Card drivers for the adapter, which leads me to believe that this might be possible. I'm trying to download versions of the Realtek HD drivers to rig this and I'll keep you all posted.

Is there any solution like this cable for mini-DVI? I checked Monoprice.com and couldn't find any. Unfortunately I have an older 2007 Macbook without mini-DP...gotta love tech obsolescence. :(

It has been some time since I looked for miniDVI adapters but, I thought monoprice used to carry a miniDVI dongle like this.. It had a mini toslink plug and miniDVI that went to a female HDMI input in a box-like looking thing. Sorry - I'm going from memory here as I can't find a link to it any longer but I hope that helps...

Also thanks again Osip. I have seen external USB audio devices that offered HD audio codec support under Windows so (I'm guessing) you might be right and there may be a driver you can use that would enable pass through for multichannel and maybe even HD audio over the USB port. whether this would still work over the single HDMI connector though is anyone's guess.

OK, I saw this yesterday, but I got confused with some of the posts and couldn't reply.

Just got the mini displayport to HDMI (they were out of the one that included USB audio, but I have separate speakers anyways) and it works perfectly fine.

This USB to HDMI Adapter is only to give you a single HDMI connection to your interests, display or receiver, with audio and video, rather than two need to do the same cables. I think the audio to the TV the most practical approach is to simply use a stereo mini-plug - "2 RCA cable to connect from your Mac to the TV analog stereo signal.

I know that the Mini USB to HDMI Converter is the most popular way to go in this kind of thing, but doing so will take quite a lot, I really do not think they have to maintain two computers. More importantly, I really do not know how many I would like to use this option, so I will see it as an inexpensive way to try. Therefore, the split would send to my iMac, and my TV speakers while other provisions of the iMac's audio is a set of speakers?

Speakers will be a set of high-definition TV, in fact, one of my subwoofer to. Those speakers bass speaker and subwoofer plug is inserted the other side of the split. As you mentioned, I just want to shut down high-definition television speaker when not in use. Mini DisplayPort/USB audio to HDMI adapter

I've tried both the Kanex and Monoprice version of this product... and neither worked.
In fact, both adapters started smoking. Any thoughts out there?
I have an IMAC 10.6 with snow installed.

DVI + toslink-audio to HDMI

Hi !

Using this:

http://www.wesellbargains.com/dvisdicotoau.html

It works nicely, combining DVI + toslink-audio to HDMI and it also outputs the toslink so I can still use it for home theater receiver.

I have Mac mini and HD-Ready TV 1366x768 connected from mini-DVI through this and Sanyo Z4 projector connected from displayport with HDMI-adapter,

Only disadvantage is that device don't have 1366x768 resolution so I have to use 720p, 1080i, 1080p or 1344+756 in HDTV wich are not natural resolutions of the panel.
