Mini dvi to Hdmi

Today, I bought a Hdmi to Mini-dvi adaptor so I could connect my xbox to my mac and use it as a screen. When I plugged them in the mac doesn't recognize it. How do i get to work?

There are a number of threads on getting this to work; search via Mroogle.
It only works with the new 27" iMacs.
