Not sure why this tread even exists.

The iPad mini should be the sweet spot in size/weight for the ipad line. As long as its a fully functional sibling to the regular pad....you can do all the same things.

Pick up a nexus 7 with 14 day return at walmart etc and see what you can do with a 7 inch tablet -- which is EVERTYHING. I have an ipad3 and the n7 and my ipad is becoming secondary to the n7. I think an ipad mini based on the rumored specs will be great.

I did that and returned it after two weeks. I dislike the small screen. Compared to a 10" tablet I didn't find it good for reading and scrolling through websites or PDF's, emails, maps, nothing. Just not a fan of small screen tablets.

Glad I tried it out though, it's the only way to know if it will suit your needs or not. I didn't find carrying or bringing a 10" tablet any more difficult or cumbersome than the Nexus7. The small size is more cute than functional imo.

Always buy the biggest screen you can comfortably manage is my suggestion, the more screen real estate the better.

iPad Mini is suited for the following uses:

1. Power Email User
2. One who loves checking calenders and arranging stuff accordingly.
3. One who loves playing light weight games
4. One who wants to have a Kindle like book reading experience
5. Perfect for Jet Setters
6. Drawing and Sketching
7. Up close movie experience.

From my experience a 10" tablet is MUCH better for everything you listed except #4

LOL. Because it is not a sweet spot for many of us. In fact, it doesn't make much sense to me at all given the existence of an (overpriced and under-spec'd) iPod Touch. It seems to me that Apple ought to do something innovative rather than imitative, but I guess there is a market for this smaller device, because lots of people seem interested. Meh. I guess we'll see what happens.

I respectfully submit to you that your thinking is NOT in the mainstream.
You see, we ALL have mobile palm sized phones. Why would we need them in a tablet? In fact, I hardly EVER use my phone except for last minute texting.

Telephony is DEAD!

He's referring to LTE/3G carrier support

Yes, thank you, urkel, that's what I meant. Mobile devices need a persistent Internet connection to be truly useful, and we are still a way away from universal wifi everywhere we go.

I know its blasphemy to say this out here, but what I feel is the missing feature for iPad/tablet keyboard solutions is one thing. The trackpad..

I do agree with you about needing a trackpad if you're going to use a tablet with a keyboard. For now, my use of the iPad is mostly limited to situations where I have no room to lay out a keyboard, so I haven't spent too much time missing a trackpad. I think what I would like is basically a MacBook Air where the keyboard detaches, and without the keyboard, the screen is an iPad that runs iOS, but when the keyboard is attached, it runs OS X. I think Apple must have something like this in their lab, but whether or not they ever perfect it enough to release to the public? We'll see, I suppose.

Correct use of nomenclature is helpful in community conversations.
Telephony - That's primarily VOICE to my ears
Data Plans - That primarily everything BUT VOICE to my eyes.
Connectivity - That's a Type and Bandwidth domain

Well, I said "cellular." Perhaps I should have added "data" and said "cellular data" to be clearer -- but you are the one who brought up telephony. I guess I'm so used to cellular now including voice *and* data, it didn't occur to me that someone would interpret that as voice only.

I have an iPad 2, and I mainly use it at home because I do not like to carry it around. I definitely use it a lot when I travel.

I feel like I would be willing to carry around the mini more than the full size iPad, which makes me want one.

Same thing you use the full size for.
Reading, email and media.
Only the mini can be used in public without looking silly.

There are no better words for it.:D
I should mention that I just had three of my bifocal eyeglass prescriptions redone with 3X for the reading section... just to accommodate the closer distance 13" to my upcoming Mini or Nexus7 purchase :)

Here we go again.

Well I don't know about the Nexus 7 part, but he does have a point about the width of the Mini. What I love about my current Kindle is being able to just slip it in my pocket and go. Seems like the iPad Mini is just a tad too wide for that, making a bag or some sort of carrying case a requirement. Which then begs the question why you wouldn't just get the bigger iPad if you have to carry a bag anyway.

Same thing that i do on my current ipad 3 just in a smaller lighter package!
I will but it , im tired of carrying this big ass ipad... Iphone too small ipad mini perfect!

I plan on buying several, wrapping them in thick cloth, and using them as pot-holders for all the upcoming holiday dinners.

The Nook Tablet is far nicer to hold and use for me than a full size iPad. However the software sucks. I'm hoping to get that same physical weight/comfort in the mini that I had in the Nook Tablet as it would be the perfect mix of physical device and OS.

I find it rather annoying that people are only associating an iPad Mini for a little kid. From what I can tell, it is a really nice-looking device that fits my tastes better than the 9.7" iPad does.

Absolutely. I am like that it is much more compact.

Bingo! Someone ELSE 'gets it'. Mind you, if pocket-ability is NOT a factor, the Mini should be great for single
  1. Lectures/presentations
  2. on-site technical manuals (imagine a chest harness)
  3. In transport- Bus/train etc.
  4. In car GPS/Maps. Navigation
-hand holdability. Think...
As I have said ad-nauseum, apple should have ditched the concept of 4:3 ratio and thinness obsession and focused on the TOTAL USER EXPERIENCE. Heck I cut my teeth studying the Apple design philosophy and the iPad Mini is a step backwards. BUT there's hope...
in an iPad Micro... sometime in the Spring of 2013 :)

Here we go again.

Have you missed all the press on the run-up to the Mini? There was one cnet clip of a writer taking the NExus7 out of his inside suite jacket pocket. I tried it with a Mini mockup I made today.
NO GO in my suite jacket.

Sir Jonathan Ive!.......
Back to the drawing board sir.:D
