Have both, but will need to side with the mini after extensive use for months. It's just so much easier to handle. I love how when I'm reading a book I can just grasp the entire thing with one hand. And the thing literally just disappears into any briefcase.

The Air is also a great device, but I find the added portability of the mini a big, big plus.

My statement was factual and I'm not alone and you seriously need to calm down. I'm finding so many retina mini owners make knee jerk replies and get all defensive. Seems like so many retina mini owners need to justify their purchase. Air owners don't seem to be that way here. Multiple threads of "Just bought a retina mini, it's the perfect size for me over the Air, Anybody else?". Seems like Air owners are pretty satisfied and don't create posts like that nor do they get all defensive at Mini owners.

I've looked at both machines as I live near 5 Apple stores. I've spent plenty of time looking at both. You're going by specs vs real life performance. I go by real life performance . Several others have said the same about the Air's screen having much better clarity than the retina mini's. Deal with it.

Its a fact the Air's screen is brighter and and has clearer text. It's very easy to see that. If you couldn't tell then check your vision. If you're happy with your Retina mini then good for you but you being defensive gives me the idea that you've heard more than a few times that the Air's screen performance is better. ;)

Not being defensive, just asking questions that you never answered....as I said, I returned my Air. Perhaps the clarity is because the display is bigger, I have perfect eyesight and live near 6 Apple stores if I wanted to check- although your point has yet to be made. Back it up with a worthwhile argument rather than throw random words around like "better", "clearer" or "brighter"! I'm not saying one is better than the other, but your argument is redundant. There are two many variables to place one above the other in terms of being better.

I did answer your question but you're too busy getting all worked up to actually have read it. Just enjoy your mini and don't worry about what I have to say. If your mini satisfies you then what I had to say shouldn't bother you. Or maybe you're just like many other retina mini owners that need to justify their purchase so they jump on threads like this one looking for someone to fight with. Don't waste your time responding with an unnecessary comment saying " You still didn't answer my question" because I did.
I'm no longer responding because I already know who and what I am dealing with. Please check your tone next time because the way you initially came at me was defensive and didn't deserve a response from me.

I don't need to justify any purchase, otherwise I would have kept my Air. Sorry you thought I was being so defensive - but general comments such as yours provoke it. I love my Mini, you love your Air, everyone is happy! Peace.

When people claim the Air display is better than the rMini, they are usually thinking about the color gamut issue pointed out by this review:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7519/apple-ipad-mini-with-retina-display-reviewed/3

The above link should go to the section on Displays, but if not, look for the section titled "Display."

Anyway, I've compared the rMini and Air displays in stores, and I do think the Air looks brighter. Not sure about clearer, and not making a call on which is better, but the displays definitely look different. I don't think it'll bother most people either way. Personally, I picked the Air because I prefer the bigger screen. But the rMini is a great device, especially if you value portability. It really is silly to argue over which is better -- they are equally as good, and which you prefer is a personal choice.

two words: color gamut. (look that up on your favorite search engine)

Edit: whoops, Night Spring beat me to it...

And just where is your proof of this? Everyplace I've read disagrees with you.

The proof is in his head - which is the only place it has to be.
I have the rMini, my wife has the Air and we are both extremely happy with our choices.
My iPad rMini is with me 24/7 and likewise my wife keeps hers in her purse. She actually buys purses with the thought in mind of accommodating the Air, and I likewise buy pants with back pockets wide enough to accommodate the rMini naked. It is however protected with a Skinomi TechSkin™ on the back.
They're both magical devices and as you well know beauty is in the eyes of the beholder... and by the way most of us live free countries.
And just a word about tech writers, they write things so that people will read them. All the tests, comments, articles and polls in the world can not convince me that my mini is not every bit as great as my wife's Air. ;)

Believe what you need to believe. ;)

I cannot read the text on websites in desktop mode on the Rmini in portrait mode, I can on the Air regardless that PPI is less. Examples would be this site, nytimes, and cnn.

I prefer reading on the Air.

I prefer playing games on the Air.

I prefer the speaker for sound on the Air.

I prefer watching movies and video on the Air.

I prefer the color gamut on the Air.

Because one PREFERS a Corolla to a Camry, it doesn't mean the latter isn't better.

Given my list, the Air (the Camry) is easily vastly superior! :D

Given the choice between a Corolla and a Camry I'd rather walk.

Why do people care? If you want smaller and lighter go for the mini, if you want bigger and more screen size go for the air, it is a choice between two different things aimed at different people. I was surprised the mini did so well but my wife and mother both love theirs and wouldn't use a full size iPad, I'm the opposite - does that make them right and me wrong (on a sample of 3, I lose) or me right and them wrong (because, obviously, I know what I'm talking about and they don't)
Or does it just mean they are both very good devices that suit different people depending on their preferences?

I disagree but if you are referring to the first gen mini then yes it is. If you referred to the iPad Mini Retina, then no, the only difference is size and the air has a 7% faster processor (Air: 1.4 GHz Mini 2: 1.3 GHz)

Then you haven't looked at the Air and the Retina Mini side by side. Some people don't have the best vision so the color difference may not be obvious to them but anyone should be able to plainly see the Air has a brighter screen. I had to turn down the brightness on the Air to match the mini.

The Toyotas was just given as an example, I could have gone Sentra versus Altima or Civic versus Accord.

All the talk about how great the Mini is for portability, I have NEVER seen a person using it in my travels but I have seen IPads alot! D
