Mini-LED MacBook Pro Models Could Stick Around Until 2028

Apple has reportedly revised its plans for adopting OLED displays across its MacBook lineup, and its existing LCD-based MacBook Pro models with mini-LED backlighting are now expected to remain available for longer than anticipated.

According to a new OLED adoption roadmap published by research firm Omdia, Apple still intends long-term adoption of OLED panels across MacBooks and iPads, but the transition pace has recently changed, owing to higher memory and component costs.

Previously, Omdia had expected Apple to discontinue its existing LCD-based models sooner, once its 14-inch and 16-inch OLED MacBook Pro models arrive – either this year or in early 2027.

However, Omdia now predicts that Apple will continue to sell both 14-inch and 16-inch LCD MacBook Pro models in parallel with the OLED MacBook Pro product line into at least 2028, a product strategy arrangement that is said to be based on cost factors.

Previous reports had already suggested Apple will position the OLED-based "MacBook Ultra" above the existing MacBook Pro models in its lineup, but there was little information about how long Apple would keep the latter models around for. Omdia's roadmap is the first to suggest they could remain available for another year at least.

That's to be expected. Likely because OLED Pros will start well over $3000. Minimally $2500 for a "base" model but $2799 wouldn't shock me.

Any OLED PC laptop screen I've owned has always looked better than my MBP 16 M1 Pro screen.

Mini-LED screens have their own issues (like blooming) that OLED doesn't.

It should be done that way just like every other laptop maker. Lenovo, Dell and HP all give users the choice when configuring a custom build.

The Mini LEDs displays on MBP's are excellent, on par with OLED so good they are sticking around. Helps those with PWM sensitivity also.

If Apple is going to go into this bizarre generic manufacturing method of 30 different models, why not just give users of the basic MacBook Pro the option to upgrade to OLED? The strategy seems to be moving away from “design a particular device and build it well” to “design a dozen devices and let QA slip for profit margins”. Just give the OLED upgrade option to customers.

Good. I don't want to have to deal with all the maintenance that comes with OLED. If you want to avoid OLED burn-in of bright static elements on your screen (because you have some crazy use case like, I don't know, running MacOS with the menubar visible), then you have to use dark mode, you have to operate the screen as dim as you can stand, you have to make sure it's turned off when you step away, and you should be doing pixel refreshes ideally every four hours. Not worth it for marginally blacker blacks, IMHO. Also, mini-LED has more comfortably readable text, and I am known to read text on my laptop screen.
