Hi MF fam,

Long time lurker and mac user, but this will be my first mini or something requiring an external monitior since the mac G3/G4 days with power tower etc!

I have the monitor in my hands but still waiting on the mini for another 10 days in NZ.

The mini specs says that HDMI will support 4k @ 240HZ, but the monitor specs say 3840x1600 @ 75hz over HDMI or 144-160 over DP.
What I wanted to know is if that HDMI restriction on the LG was because most cards at time of production couldn't produce the 240hz over HDMI or if it is a screen limitation.

if yes, how am I best to connect to the LG, HDMI to DP, USB-C to DP etc, I am sort of lost and want to make sure I have the correct cables for when the mini arrives.

<3 :)

USB C to DisplayPort cable is your best bet. You'll get the maximum resolution and refresh rate in addition to FreeSync support.

Actual limitation seems to be that MacOS doesn't support 240hz yet, although I'm pretty sure an upcoming update resolves this. Either way even if you're stuck at 144hz it's better than 60hz.

Thanks for the reply, I need to make sure I get a c to DP 1.4 as well? Not all cables are made the same?

Sorry for the inane question but I’ve been in the iMac eco system since forever so want to make sure I get it right!

Yes as long as it's DP 1.4 you'll get the most out of your monitor and the Mac :)
