Glossy is only good if you like working in a darkened environment. I prefer a moderately bright room, near an open window. I also don't have the luxury of positioning my desk so that all light sources are behind the monitor.

I still think you are speaking from experience using older monitors. I'm typing this in front of a P2421D. It's nothing special but it is fairly modern, and the matte coating is perfectly fine. I definitely don't feel it's grainy or see rainbow shimmer.

There is a quote here from someone using the Dell 8K. Considering he paid $5000 for it he's probably pickier than any of us!

"What I didn’t expect is that the UP3218K is a glossy display, as opposed to a matte display. Depending on the brightness and colors, you might see reflections. With my preferred brightness of 50%, I can clearly see reflections when displaying darker colors, e.g. on a black terminal emulator background, or even in my grey Emacs theme.

While one can mentally ignore the reflections after a little while, I still consider the glossyness a mild annoyance. I hope as 8K displays become more prevalent, display vendors will offer matte 8K displays as well."

I used to have an HP monitor where the matte coating really annoyed me. It made the image looked really grainy, and some rainbow effects. I found other matte monitors to be almost as bad, or even worse. I have just got an HP Z27k G3 for a bargain price, even though I was worried about the anti-glare screen. It isn't a problem at all. The image is sharp, and no rainbow effects. The only thing wrong with the monitor is the 16:9 ratio, but I'll put up with it for the price.
Oh interesting for both, maybe I’m just remembering old monitors — I remember rainbowing on them, which is super annoying when doing very high rez work

I would love to go see some in person to make a decision but every place I go with monitors only has 1080p ones out 😥

I had a 4K P2415q at one job and it was really quite nice, good DPI, but the rainbowing was really annoying — that was a few years ago and I assume from your experience that they have updated them since

I’ll have to look into, I was just hoping for an Apple display to complement my M1 Pro but it’s getting longer and longer in the tooth

My current Dell U3011 and U2410 both exhibit some rainbowing and softness. These are older displays from 2011 and 2010. I used a newer ultrasharp and noticed that the rainbow effect wasn't as obvious as my monitors.

Dear fellows, based on the OPs ideas I was exited for that device. I got one :) and i hope it is as bright and shiny as I expect it to be. If anyone is interested I’ll post impressions.

I don't think of it as an iMac killer but makes me wonder if Apple shouldn't be selling monitors that allow Minis to have a special way of 'snapping' on to make the equivalent to an iMac. This allows either to be replaced when newer models come out. Good for the buyer and could be good for Apple. No serious guts needed in the monitor. Just snap on the Mini and its integrated.

I think @Amethyst1 (and me) would be interested in the mode timings for this monitor. 3840 x 2560 @ 8 bit @ 60Hz only just fits into the DisplayPort 1.2 spec assuming there is some form of reducing blanking (such as CVT-RB). I'm not sure how to view that information though. perhaps there is a terminal command?

Also, I would be interested in things like: how sharp is text? how do you feel about the screen surface texture/reflection handling? what brightness level does it feel comfortable at? Even better if you can compare it to other 4K/5K monitors you've used!

Yeah. SwitchResX will do.

Hey, I realized that id be a lazy tech-reviewer. Anyways:

Sound: I have tried different cables, HDMI, 3,5mm cable... The Mateview is displayed as output on my m1 Mac and once it is connected there is only stutter, lags.

Ports: the usb-A ports on the screen work well while only using the usb-c cable for the screen and data. It is not slow, charing is also possible.

Scale: I guess that one should use the scaled resolution. (one step smaller "Looks like ..1707p". For me its hard to tell if the texts are sharper in optimized or scaled mode.. since the fonts are smaller...

I think the colors are good, its not possible to catch them with a iPhone 11pro camera 😅

When I close the lid, the Mateview goes black and back on again, but when I lock the Macbook by pushing the "Powerbutton" on my MacBook before closing, then it stays black... I guess that's fine for me.

Here is a Linke where you can get some images:

but they are bad.. maybe you get an idea of reflection/size 😅

Interessingly, they sent it by express mail to get best possible customers experience.

Thanks for the many photos! It seems that the monitor has excellent brightness and few reflections even in a room with plenty of daylight.

Can you take a screenshot of this panel which you access from About this Mac...System Report:

That looks pretty fresh!
Sucks to hear about the internal speaker. You can really tell the difference in peak brightness with the MateView and MacBook side by side.

I’m thinking of going with a Mac mini paired with this as my future upgrade instead of the iMac.

Do you like the 3:2 aspect ratio, its colors and the overall sharpness :) ? I would use it for coding so this monitor really attracts me.

More questions :)

So, when you connect it usb-c -> usb-c, default resolution is 'looks like' 1920x1280? (pixel doubled as it should be)

I watched many youtube videos, but they don't mention anything, it's just 'you can connect it and it works', I guess they have no idea about resolutions, macos scaling options and all that

When I close the lid, the Mateview goes black and back on again, it mean you can still work when u close ur MB lid?

Can you list which scaled resolution options you get with the MateView?
it says:
1500*1000
1920*1280
2560*1707
3008*2005
3840*2560
if I make a screenshot at 2560*1707. That resolution of the screenshot ist 5120 × 3414. in standard settings the screenshot has the native resolution (3840*2560). I wonder if scaled resolution eats resources...

im not sure if that image answers your question

Where are you located at? Did you use a shipping forwarder?
I m in Germany, i Just ordered it at Huawei, there was some kind of preorder special offer since it came out here on August 4. 2021
Do you like the 3:2 aspect ratio
Yes I love it, especially on images with 3:2 ratio like that ones my dslr does, I have many images I have never seen like that. I guess there are very few options to enjoy digital images like that.
It ist super sharp and I like the colors and it is bright. :)

1920x1280 that's it :)

No wake on USB?

sorry I didn't want to confuse anyone.
of course I can click on my external keyboard and everything wakes up.

and yes if you don't lock the screen the MateView expects you to stay on the computer if you close the lid

I'd be really interested in such a monitor. Then I see they built the electronics into the stand, so no option for a vesa mount....

Ah ok. I'm in the States which has a Huawei ban at the moment.

Yea I would like to use this as a Photography screen as well. If I can get a good forwarder I'd like to get this as well.

Thanks for the pic uploads!

EDIT: Can you link the monitor from the online store you bought it from?
Just found it on ZenMarket. For those in the US this looks like it may be our only option as Japan is 60hz electricity. The shipping cost is a killer.

Yeah, and the stand doesn't allow rotation so no portrait option possible. Well, I suppose somebody on 'there I fixed it' could duct tape it to the wall...
