Minidisplay Cable Works for Target Disk Mode?

Can I use a minidisplay cable for target disk mode like a thunderbolt cable? Thanks.

No, it does not have the proper circuitry for Target Disc Mode.

Yes, I'm doing it with my 2011 27" iMac and 2014 13" rMBP.
Works like a charm. Since the iMac doesn't have Thunderbolt, you need to use the MiniDisplay cable.
