i got a new unibody in my lap right now, and i dont see any place were a fullsize DVI port could go, the proprietaryness of the mini displayport does bug me, but in time it will become more commonplace, especially since apple uses it.

Anyone else think the MiniDisplayport is the worst decision apple has ever made? I love their computers and own a few of them. I was considering upgrading to one of the newer unibody MBPs, but I just learned the the minidisplayport is the only way to get video out of it. I use a Matrox Triplehead2go frequently and this does not support it. At least they could have left the DVI port on the machines.

Oh yeah, and $100 for a Mini Displayport to Dual Link DVI that has its bugs.

DVI accepts higher resolutions, anyways.

Well nearly the worst decision in recent history. I had to have the Unibody MBP last October. I then found that I could not use it drive two Dell LCDs at 1600 x 1200 (even with a Matrox Dual Head Digital A2D that I had used with my SR MBP 2.4GHz). So I had to revert to a WinPC. The MBP became my second machine instead of my primary machine. It is a sad day.

I think that today you can see rationality only on Lenovo notebooks. Ports are a mess on many laptops. Recently, a sony Vaio I used had a HDMI port and a VGA one without screws. No DVI.

It looks like no one is looking for offering a decent notebook with an advanced set of standard features.

Its new and a little inconvenient for some but I think its the right way to go into the future.

For me I own a 15" unibody mbp and an 24" LED ACD and can say that when it does work well its awesome, especially the size of the mini displayport.

re: 3
Actually the often asked question of:
can I play Blu-Ray... (which might be solved in the future after all models get DisplayPort).

The $100 adapter is a bit silly though. I won't be upgrading my 17" MBP anytime soon.

I could play Bluray just fine on my PC via DVI as my Graphics cards both support HDCP over DVI even Dual-Link DVI (2560x1600 Resolution) And this isn't 'new' even cards from 2006 could do HDCP over DVI which is a requirement for sanctioned Bluray playback.

Again Display Port = Answer to a Question that no one asked. We have HDMI for Audio and DVI for Video we didn't need Display Port.

This argument is pretty flimsy for a number of reasons:

1. Newer monitors are being updated to also include DisplayPort (even if Apple uses it exclusively)
2. Newer computers with DP or MDP can use an inexpensive adapter to get to VGA or DVI inputs on monitors.
3. Those who need dual-link (30 inch monitors) and a more expensive adapter can usually afford it.

The only place where it may be ahead of its time is with Apple monitors that only have DisplayPort inputs -- that requires a computer with DP output, and those are pretty new.

p.s. Apple had DVI on it's Powerbooks long for years while everyone else was using crappy VGA.

'Newer monitors are being updated to also include DisplayPort' Yeah well that would be nice if Apple had actually included a Display Port connector. They didn't they included a Mini Display Port connector that no OEM except Apple has made a commitment to. Might I also point out that as yet no adapter exists to turn Mini Display Port in to Normal Display Port.

Further more I don't want to buy new Monitors. My 30" Monitors are the cream of the crop. Even if these died I'd buy them again via Ebay or a Reseller (I don't much care for the new Dell 30" and I never have for Apples). I don't need a Display Port. Tell me what does Display Port offer me that DVI does not? 2560x1600 @ 60Hz, HDCP. I don't need a connector that is smaller to do the same thing.

Finally about the 'Rich people can afford adapters' don't be silly that is just a ridiculous statement to make. Not only is the Adapter that Apple supply around 10% of the price of a base 30" Display to begin with but the adapter itself does not work correctly with even Apples own 30" Display. Only an idiot purchases a product that by design will only 'maybe' work with there existing equipment.

Given the choice I would rather have DVI and yes Apple brought DVI to the PowerBook when others were only offering VGA but this is completely different. First of all the DVI to VGA adapter was INCLUDED with every Notebook and worked 100% flawlessly. Second VGA was obviously inferior as it wasnt digital, 3rdly most monitors that used VGA were CRT and we were gradually moving to LCD displays which by design are suited to digital connections of which DVI was emerging as the defacto standard. The same cannot be said for Display Port which to me is a bigger 'Bag of Hurt' then Bluray is. And by the way where the hell is the new Final Cut? (I was on a roll :D)
